Multiple submissions are allowed, so you can correct previous wrong answers, add more details, or also answer questions you did not answered to in your previous submission.

First round will be finished after 48 hours (on September 3rd 7.30 PM CE time), soon after finish of the first round I will announce the second round for unanswered questions (next 24 hours)

Please note that Q5 differs a bit from the usual. Quite few questions this time, and some rather easy, so I thought we'd have a really hard but point-rewarding one too. It looks weird though, since the script doesn't like line-breaks. I hope you don't mind.

Q5 Dawn, Temüjin, I'll give some questionable third-points on Q5.1, last part of question. The persons are wrong.

There is something really fishy going on with the result table though - it doesn't list the answers in correct order. I'll notify Cyrus to take a look at the script, till then, I'll show the scores in the starting post. Edit: nah I won't, his messge box is full . I'll handle it manually instead. 'Night all.

Some of the questions are too vague. It's too hard to answer them. There should be at least one variable that should be mandatory in the question like time or place. Cuz like one of the questions is like this guy did this to that guy, and that guy killed him. Who was that guy?

boody4, that's the spirit of the questions of the TQ - else it would be too easy using google. At least I try to formulate the questions so you have to have some historical knowledge to start searching

Dawn, boody, Janus, correct meaning of the Mongol's name - but not correct true name.

Janus, Q5 - same as Danw&Temüjin above.

fastspawn asked about what counted for "early" film period on Q11 - and I'll give you the answer I gave him:

Early period can be considered pre-sound (ie before ~1930).

Some clarification on Q one: General A is the answer. A was called demon of the civil war by a person B. B also sent out A to purge people, and eventually B killed A.

Ouch. I remember doing that too.

Anyway, Q5, the stepson was wrong (although the stepson's father was not) and so the destruction date of the building.

Yeah, there were some easy ones this time, so I wanted a real hard one, but Q4 ended up far too hard I fear...

Your latest guess was certainly long-bearded, but it's not facial hair I'm after. Once the second round begins it'll be easier, the hint will make it rather solvable.

I did think somone would connect on the "famous horsemen" though.

You could easily get more points on Q5 too though, the building in where that guy was crowned is not so hard.

Same with Janus - who got the first name of the stepson wrong - but not the nick, of some reason.

edit: hmm, random guesses seems to be the most efficient way to solve Q4...

Answer away - though you won't get points

Question makers will get points for their own questions, how much depends on various things (see the rules page), and can also get points after the best question voting.

Questions and Answers

Q1: Who was the general who was referred to as the demon of the civil war, sent out to purge and eventually also killed - all by the very same man? (by Kapikulu)
A1: Mikhail Tukhachevsky. The man who did all those things to him was no other than Josef Stalin

Those who answered completely: Janus Rook, fastspawn

Q2: Who are the Three Great Unifiers of Japan (by Gubookjangoon)
A2:
Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Tokugawa Ieyasu. Since the Japanese habit of putting the surname first may cause some confusion, I allowed answers were only the first-name of one or two of the unifiers were provided. These three are generally refered to as the Three Great Unifiers, even though the first really did not succeed completely, being assassinated just before. His vassal, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a peasant's son lacking both home and name until he came into Nobunaga's service, would complete his former master's ambition.

Those who answered completely: fastspawn, Dawn, Janus Rook, demon, boody4, Temujin

Q3: This American "adventurist" set out with around 50 men and captured a province of a foreign nation. He quickly lost the territory and was charged for illegally waging war, but shortly after, he set out with another force of about 50 men and seized control of a civil war-torn country, which he installed himself as its president for almost 5 years. Who was he? (by Imperator Invictus)
A3:
William Walker. Link provided by Dawn: http://www.calnative.com/stories/n_walk.htm - Saga of William Walker

Those who answered completelyDawn, Janus, MixcoatlToltecahtecuhtli

Q4: Long-haired revolt leader, fighting for freedom lost against a state known today as a very powerful one. Praised by the same man who wrote about some famous albeit not very succesful horsemen, the revolt shocked the oppressors but was eventually crushed and the leader, whose name we are searching, ended up dead. The mentioned name? (by Styrbiorn)

A4: Boadicea, Queen of the Iceni. With a waist-long hair, this red-head lead a huge revolt against the Roman oppressors. Succesful at first, annihilating the XIth Legion to the last man, capturing Camoludunum (Colchester) and Londinium and slaughtering its Roman inhabitants, the uprising was eventually crushed by the disciplined Roman army at a now unknown location. Exactly how Boadicea died is unknown as well, but died she did, in conjunction with this showdown, either by poison or disease. The man who wrote about her was Lord Tennyson, author of The Charge of the Light Brigade.

Those who answered completelyfastspawn, Dawn

Q5: 1. A ruler visited the home of a man who was rumoured to be the best shot of the land, and ended up forcing this man to shoot an arrow through an apple placed at the head of his son - else loose his head. The marksman picked up a few arrows, and shot one succesfully through the apple. First part of the question is, who was the ruler and the marksman, and what was the intent of picking up more than one arrow?

 2. The marksman brought up a boy of royal lineage. The boy, who apparently had a noteworthy shape of some of his hair, grew up and became a mighty a ruler as his regal fathers, and also became the father of an even more powerful ruler-to-be. The stepson of the marksman died just after getting hold of another noble title. Who was the stepson, and who was his father?

3.The mentioned son of the stepson gained enough power to have himself crowned. The building in which he was crowned have been destroyed on quite a few occasions - which was the last time? (by Styrbiorn)

A5: 1. Toki Palnesson, aka Palnatoki, who was a former hirdman and famous berserk of the king of Denmark. Being as skilled at boasting as with sword and bow - especially after some of his beloved beer - king Harald Bluetooth forced him to proove his showing off about being the best archer in the world  - by shooting an arrow through an apple placed on the head of his son. He succeeded. When the king answered why he had picked up several arrows, Toki replied they were meant for the king, had the first arrow struck the boy. This happened in the late 10th century. The story is to be found in the Jómsvikinga saga and writings of the Danish historian Saxo, but there are doubts whether it is based on an even older story. Whichever it is, whoever wrote about Wilhem Tell had a liking for Scandinavian sagas...

2. The stepson is Sven Forkbeard. Supported by his stepfather, he eventually drove away his biological father Harald Gormsson Bluetooth (same guy as in former question ), to become king of Denmark, and later he also conquered England - although he died only weeks after his throne-seizing.

3. Svein's son Knut the Great ("Canute" in English) ended up being king of Denmark, England, Norway and parts of Sweden. He was chrowned in no other building than the cathedral of St Paul, which's last event of destruction was the Great Fire of London in 1666.

Q7: This person had arranged for him/her to be buried in Westminster Abbey lived to become unnaturally old. (by Glinert)
A7: Thomas Parr, living to an age of 153 years. The man got married his first time at the age of roughly 80, and did penance at the age of 100 for producing an illegitimate child. His age was famed, and he was brought to London to meet the king. However the environmental change and filth of the city killed him, and the king arranged for him to be buried in Westminster Abbey. http://www.westminster-abbey.org/library/burial/parr.htm - Link here http://www.westminster-abbey.org/library/burial/parr.htm -

A woman was one of those exacuted, the only one in the history of this area.Who was the lawman, the emperor, and the woman. when and where did the murder take place. (by Dawn)

Special Persistency Award to Dawn for never giving up just because having a few more or less totally incorrect answers. Or, we say here, for being bull-headed.

Special Answer Scoring Award is a second award to fastspawn, for wiping the floor (well, swiftly brushing, at least) with the opposition.

Score based awards

Best Question Award is divided between questions 4, 5 and 8. Thus the only one gaining points is Dawn, getting an additional 2/3 points for question no 8.

Main Award - Winner of Total Quiz X part 2 for... Dawn

(Result in front page)

Congratulations to all winners!

Hmm, that doesn't look too good centered...

Seems to be a good idea to send in questions though

Thanks Fastspawn.

I think that maybe there was an error in the scoring on Question9 I'm not sure that I sould have got that many points for the question. If thats the case then the Winner should be Fastspawn. Could you Check it Strybion?

I'm pretty sure the calculations are correct.

Total Round 1 Bonus = Qsubmitted * (Qanswered / Qavailable)

Qsubmitted = Total number of questions on the Quiz submitted by the player.
Qanswered = Number of questions the player answered correctly in Round 1
Qavailable = Total number of questions available to the player, which is the total number of questions in the quiz minus those that he submitted.

QUESTION WRITERS BONUS FOR ROUND TWO is given by the following formula:

Total Round two Bonus =
Q(r2) * [ ( AP(qws pts rd1) / LP(Leader's pts rd1) ) * LPII(rd2 leader's pts rd II)/(NQLII)]]

Q(r2) = Total number of questions by the player (question writer) that are in Round 2
AP(qws pts rd1) = Total number of points scored by the player (question writer) in round one, including his bonus points in round one.
LP(Leader's pts rd1) = Total number of points of the highest scoring player as of round one.
LPII(rd2 leader's pts rd II) = Total number of points scored IN ROUND TWO by the best performing player in round two (disregarding scores in round one).
NQLII = number of question ansered by round II leader in round II (LPII/NQLII =average points for 1 question earned by round II Leader in round II)

Bonus for round one is 2*8/9 ~= 1,778  =>  ~0.889p per question for round one.

Bonus for round two is 1*[ ((10+1.778) / 10)  *  (4/2) ] ~= 2.356.

Points for Q8: 0.888...+2/3 (best question) ~= 1,56.

Points for Q9: 0.888+2.356 ~= 3.24.

Seems correct to me. Although I agree it's a lot of points just for one question...

edit: damn, I've swapped the questions.
Doesn't matter though, the total score is still the same.

Points for Q8: 0.888...+2.356+2/3 (best question) ~= 3.91

Points for Q9: 0.888... ~= 0.89

Hmm.. I think in case of Q9 you should calculate only second round points..the idea of that system was that question author should be able to earn exactly the same amount of points as any other participant... also  (AP(qws pts rd1) / LP(Leader's pts rd1) ) should not be > 1

as the total number of points of the highest scoring player should be calculated also including bonus..

I agree that would be more fair - however changing the rules in afterhind is even more unfair. I think we shall look over this before the next part, using this as reference, but we must let the already happened result stay.

I know it doesn't matter now, (since my ranking won't change anyway), but I could've sworn I but Sven Forkbeard down? Can someone tell me what my answer was?

You wrote 'Harold' Forkbeard. I did think it was a typo and was about to give you points anyway, but decided to notify you about it instead (some page back).

Crap! sounds like something I'd do. I thought it was a spelling error like using Svein or Sweyn or something like that. Your right I didn't deserve the points.......still tho' got third place.

Well it seems to be a math glitch that makes things turn out this way. I myself have no problems with you adjusting the forumula for this round to reflect more accurately. Fastspawn played better than I did. He amswered more questions correct and generally did a good job. If you change it I don't mind. Placeing second to someone that good is fine with me.

A shame, since you did find the answer. Anyway, be sure I don't care about spelling errors the slightest.

I'm surprised you did not notice my note though - you even replied to it.

How about AP(qws pts rd1) being the total number of players points excluding round 1 bonus (which would make the quota <= 1), and round one bonus would only be calculated for questions not passing on to round 2. In this case that would mean 0.88... points for Q9 and 2 points (+bonus=2.66...) for Q8.

This would apply from and including the coming part 3 though, no changing of rules afterwards (<- take notice, I'm rather stubborn about this).

Styrbiorn this is not the change of the rules, this just interpetation which I have already used to caluclate the points in the previous Quizes..if the topic  with our discussion regarding new calculation system would be not deleted you would see that idea of calcuation was  to give the question author possibility to earn max 1 point for the question in 1st round nad max 2 point if the question was in the second round (but not in total 3 or more)

I know the reason behind the point system, but there is no room for interpretations - I calculated after what was written. Let's not get caught here though, leave the past and think of the future. What do you think of the changes I suggested (I suspect that's how it was meant to be/the way you've been calculating)?

No, it doesn't. Just realized a submitter could end up without points for the second round questions if no one manages to answer a round  2 question, or have less points than for a round 1 questions. Maybe max(round 1 bonus/q , round 2 bonus/q as stated above).

just my 2 cents,

why don't we let the max score be a % score instead of a fixed number.

For example if i have 2 questions that are on the quiz, instead of having a max score of 15 i should have a max score of 13. I think this gives the contributor of the question a slight advantage if he gives a tough question, and a drawback if he gives a question easily answered.

Bonus for round two is 1*[ ((10+1.778) / 10)  *  (4/2) ] ~= 2.356.

I think you got it switched around. ((10+1.778) / 10) Should be 10/(10+1.778)

Mathematically, ( AP(qws pts rd1) / LP(Leader's pts rd1) )  cannot exceed 1

Yeah, when TJK and I (yes, I was actually very into this back then) wrote those forumulas, we really stumbled on the round two bonuses. The concept is to use probability sampling, but as you know, in a quiz with this few questions, theres a problem. The only way of getting away from this fully is to have a dedicated team of question writers who don't participate.

Well, this was not precisely described but:

1. Leader points for round one should be also calculated with bonus points

2. The bonus points for the questions should be calculated only in one round (1st or 2nd)

Mathematically the quotient can exceed one - unless you meant bonus points should be included in the denominator, which I suppose you would state explicitly since you did it in the numerator variable...

Edit: apparently they should. Please add that.

TJK, if you count 1 or 2, a player can end up without points for a question in round 2.

Yes, in case nobody will score in the round 2..this means the question was to hard..

WHAT ... I go to vacations for 13 days (just 13!) and when I am back I found you run an entire TQ edition w/o me! Me, the second Moderator after "father" Kolovrat ( !

And not only you did not  wait for me, there is not even a question of mine in the quiz (maybe for the first time since I started to play, not sure). I feel so uselessss!!!

Just joking!

I know very well it's impossible to wait anyone: everytime is a bad time for someone, when the related group is large enough

My congratulations to everybody: The excellent Moderator Styrbiorn , the Former and deputy- moderator TJK , everyone who participated , and, of course, the Winner. Good job, Dawn!   W/o taking anything from the exceptional fastspawn, I think you deserved to win, at least for your tenacity (or, how was Styrbiorn wrote, bull-headedness ?)

As to the bonus points for question makers, that was longly debated twice, first between Cyrus and me, and then, later, with TJK and other people. That last time we produced that complicated formulas, and realized there was no perfect system (or, at least, we found none) that permitted everybody, who submitted at least an answer) to reach no more no lesser score than somebody who created no question but answered every (there was a looong thread on the old forum about that).

IMHO, to have the question maker to be able to have a plus is a good policy, since encourage questions' submission: however, Styrbiorn, feel free to change the rules if you so wish, since practically all previous moderators did so, up to a certain extent.

Finally, a special mention for Cyrus (+ whomever helped him), who rebuilt this forum . . . with all this  funny animated smilies I am enjoying to test now.

hmm, if I still have the same thinking as I did long ago, Round 1 bonuses should be calculated immediately after round one is over, and that score is then used in subsequent equations as the current total score for that player earned in round one. Mathematically, round one bonuses are independent from round two scores.

So the denominator would include bonuses in round 1 because bonuses should be immediaetly added after that round. (The quotient cannot exceed one because even if the author has the highest score, then the denominator would be that score because he/she is also the leader).

Yeah, I was keeping constant watch at your 'latest online' date, even considering postponing the thing when you hadn't shown up the day before the quiz start. I should've checked the away thread...

But I know how you feel, I think I missed 3-4 whole quizzes due to me being in the army.

No problem, Styrbiorn, really.

Well, did you decide whether and how to change the bonus rules?

Hmmm... one has to wonder whether bulls and pigs have different attitudes on the opposite shores of the Atlantic ...
