Henry Brereton's account of the battle of Klushino 1610. The joined armies of Russia and Sweden (30-35 thousands soldiers including about 2000 English and Scottish mercenaries) were defeated by Polish army of 6000-7000 soldiers. Quite interesting piece of archaic English:








And his opinion on quality of Polish troops and Russian:

Interesting also that the Poles were still then respecters of the chivalry-bound tradition of professional 
soldiery, & offer to accept the 'mercenaries' into their forces, even if they were not 'good Catholics'..

The religion of mercenaries wasnt important because that time many Poles were protestants as well. The king and majority of people were catholic, counter-reformation movement was getting stronger but still many favoured protestant religion and their rights were guaranted by so called "Warsaw Confederation Act".
