In the Catechism of the Catholic Church in the section entitled Christian Prayer, 2582 states:
"Elijah is the 'father' of the prophets, 'the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob.'" How is Elijah the "father" of the prophets? |

It is Elijah who is foretold to come before the Messiah arrives.
"Behold, I am sending you Elijah the prophet before the ‘Day of God’" - Malachi 3:23 As such he is the most important prophet, the one who come before the salvation of mankind. As the top dog amongst God's prophets, he is therefore 'the father of the prophets', since all the others are beneath him in prominence, and all do no more but repeat the message that he is destined to fulfill. |

All quite true Sid. But......... Deut 34 10-12. '' 10And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face, 11In all the signs and the wonders, which the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land, 12And in all that mighty hand, and in all the great terror which Moses shewed in the sight of all Israel.'' *Bible Hub. And would show the divergence in opinion amongst the Hebrew Christian faiths interps as to 'who's who' among the prohpets. It always presented a conundrum for me; yet both are based on scripture. Iow. do we accept at face value Malachi because he is later in the chronology? Or do both remain somehow correct...given the context. The humanities and strengths-weakness-doubts and strong characters of both men...continue to astound me. I love em both. So while the RRC catechisms... are correct for the RCC..it is not necessarily so for others in the Hebrew-Christian beliefs. Tho granted this as not the original question in op. For ultimately it is GOD who is 'father' of all. And by tradition remains the same for all Christians.
