Under the Act of Supremacy, passed by Parliament on November 28, 1534, King Henry VIII was declared, 'The only supreme head in earth of the Church of England'.
Further legislation made it treasonable to deny his supremacy.

not uncommon for very strong minded rulers...who did not take lightly any challenge to their position. very old. innumerable examples exist throughout history.

In the current context; it is being exacerbated as an attack by any and all; on those who maintain a relationship with faith-religion-or more conservative and traditional values.

The Act of Supremacy stated: that the King our sovereign lord, his heirs and successors kings of this realm, shall be taken, accepted, and reputed the only supreme head in earth of the Church of England, called Anglicana Ecclesia.
