As soon as she became Queen of England in 1558, Elizabeth I faced expectations that she should find a husband.
Elizabeth's suitors included King Philip II of Spain, Archduke Ferdinand and Archduke Charles of Austria, Crown Prince Eric of Sweden, Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy.
Who should Elizabeth marry?

Henry Fitzalan, 12th Earl of Arundel, let it be known that he was a willing suitor for the Queen's hand in marriage.
Although Fitzalan was a widower who had married twice, he was Catholic.

King Philip II of Spain sent his envoy, Ambassador de Feria, to begin marriage negotiations with Queen Elizabeth within days of her accession.
Elizabeth was fascinated by the negotiations. She held several meetings with de Feria, who assumed that as King Philip had offered his hand, Elizabeth would accept.
Elizabeth reminded Philip that the Pope would never allow him to marry her unless she became a Catholic.

Archduke Charles of Austria, a son of Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I, was a candidate.
Queen Elizabeth inquired what he looked like and if he was well educated.
The formal proposal of marriage from Ferdinand I on behalf of Archduke Charles was brought to England in May 1559 by Baron Caspar von Breuner.
By autumn 1559, Queen Elizabeth had written to Ferdinand I that she was not considering marriage. She was honored by Charles's interest.

Another of Elizabeth's suitors was Adolf, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp.
Adolf was a brother of King Christian III of Denmark. Among the Queen's marriage candidates, the Duke officially visited England. Adolf was Protestant and wealthy.

Another suitor was Crown Prince Eric of Sweden.
He had been wooing Elizabeth since before her accession.
When she was Queen he renewed his efforts. Eric sent his brother, Duke John of Finland to act as his emissary in September 1559.

When Queen Elizabeth was 37, another drawn-out courtship began. Tentative approaches were made by the English Council to French ambassador de La Mothe regarding a possible French husband.
King Charles IX of France and his mother, Catherine de Medici offered Elizabeth Charles' brother Henri. Henri was the Duc d'Anjou. He was nineteen.
Henri wanted assurances that he and his courtiers could freely worship in the Catholic religion.
Also Henri wanted to rule jointly as King of England and receive a pension of 60,000 pounds a year for life.
