Illustration 25 ( Women in the harem). What are those things under the shoes of the depicted woman? Do they have a practical function?

I'm inclined to believe that they [the shoes] were a fashion fad to increase a woman's hight and sexuality, not unlike high heels today.

Looking at the picture I'm inclined to agree that the chopines, in this case, are almost certainly a social statement of implied importance. This is not to say that they're not being used, by the wearer, to rise above dust or mud...etc....This type of footwear has also been known as bath house shoes too at times.

What a handsome figure of a dragon. No wonder I fall madly in love with the Alani Dragon now, the avatar, it's a gorgeous dragon picture.
