According to the British themselves that honor has already been awarded twice before, first to the
Battle of Britain Spitfire and then to the Lancaster bomber.

The Mosquito was an exceptional aircraft, but there were many exceptional aircraft during that war depending on the role they played, which makes it almost impossible to choose any one aircraft as "the best of all".

Other candidates would be the P-51 Mustang, the B-17 bomber, the P-47 Thunderbolt, the US Navy's Corsair, Hell Diver and Hellcat, the Russian Sturmovik, the Japanese Zero, the German Fw 109 and the superb Ju-88.

Basically I do agree with you. The choice is difficult, there was many excellent planes on both sides of the conflict.

IL-2 Soviet  should be certanly  mentioned in the "list of the best" attack aircraft

Nerveless, Mosquito was a pleasure to fly and was laved by their users. In the past I have met pilot from one of Mosquito squadron. He told me that it was the best plane he ever flew.

Personally, I am surprised that none of you mentioned the Hawker Hurricane. Its record during the Battle of Britain is second to none.

I would replace B17 with B29, the former a heavy bomber that could only carry a medium load. The latter a technological leap.

Some will say the ME262 was the best plane to come out of the war.

If you're going down that line the ME262 would be the second best, the De Havlland Vampire is generally regarded the better of the two.

Two things:
1--You really can't include the jets because neither made ANY significant contribution to the war.
2--Just a personal opinion but if I had been any airman in the war my 1st choice would have been the P-38 Lightning.  When they began to introduce the P-51 into the ETO, those units flying the Lightning came close to mutiny they loved that bird so much.
