During the Civil War the Confederacy chose grey uniforms as this was the most common color for Southern militias. However, some volunteer units wore blue uniforms prewar, or looted US equipment following the capture of Harpers Ferry. Likewise, there were several notable Union regiments attired in grey in 1861 (like the New York Fire Zouaves), resulting in many casualties from friendly fire. Other units wore adapted civilian clothing, like the red shield-front overshirt (Louisiana tigers) or the fringed hunting jacket:

True. Early in the war the US was woefully prepared & green to fight combat.
The array of uniforms on both sides reflected just how both sides made do
with what was on hand. Sadly, both figured out what to do and the deaths
mounted.

European miitary styles, and especially French military styles, were the tre chic in America.  Both sides formed Zouaves regiments and they were especially popular in the north.  Two regiments of union sharpshooter were issued Jaeger style uniforms.  Another continental  European inspired uniforms was the 1st New Jersey cavalry, nicknamed "Butterflies" due to their uniform.

As a side note, the Federals ordered 10,000 Zouave uniforms from France only to learn that the French were physically smaller than many Americans. Most of the ordered uniforms were too small and could not be used.

Not a Confederate soldier, but a US National Guardsman. In many early war regiments there were companies who wore different uniforms to the others

I'm thinking even CSA General Thomas Jackson wore his
US Army tunic for much of early part of the war. What an odd
site all these uniforms must have presented itself.

Technically Nick, Kentucky being a Border State was neutral, although
it did provide troops to both sides. The photo you provided looks more like
Union troops. I'm just going by what the photo reads.

They're definitely Confederates from what would eventually become the Orphan Brigade. The one in the English-style uniform is from the Citizen Guards (9th KY), and the two musicians are from the Lexington Rifles. I can't quite make out the caption for the soldier in blue, but i think he's a National Guardsman as i've seen similar uniforms on early war Georgian troops.

These illustrations came from a book on Civil War uniforms by Philip Haythornthwaite. Most of the Kentucky Citizen Guards joined the rebels. Those who remained loyal called themselves the Kentucky Home Guard

Note the similarities between the Kentucky Confederate and this pvt from the 5th Georgia. Both these uniforms are derived from that of the regular army, right down to the kepi and sky blue piping. The Marylander's kit is equally interesting: at a glance it appears identical to that of Northern Zouaves like the 14th Brooklyn

From a distance the uniforms of the Veteran Reserve Corps could appear grey. This unit was made up soldiers no longer fit for frontline service. They were issued sky blue shell jackets because these were cheaper than the navy blue uniforms of the infantry

I haven't been able to find any pictures, but one Confederate regiment apparently wore pickelhaubes. These were copied from the regulation German and Swedish helmets of the 1840s, but the insignia was replaced with an American brass shako plate

Other Confederates wore a type of pointed fez or peaked nightcap, often made from the sleeve of an old coat. These hats were Polish in origin and widely worn by French troops during the Napoleonic Wars

Even when a Yankee soldier wore blue he could still be mistaken for a rebel. At Bull Run the Garibaldi Guard took a lot of friendly fire as green Union troops believed their feathered slouch hats were southern uniforms. The red piping didn't help much either: in the regular army this was standard for artillerymen while infantry were identified by blue, black or white facings

To quote Alan Farmer, Johnny Reb's greatcoat, boots, pants and blanket were made by Uncle Sam. It was common practise to strip the bodies of dead Yankees to replace worn-out kit. As many Yanks replaced their regulation kepis with slouch hats, it would be very difficult to determine the allegiance of the Reb in the center were it not for his battle flag and grey-clad buddies

Hi there! I just bought this cabinet card, and I'm trying to figure out what kind of uniform this is. Do you have any ideas about the type of uniform this soldier is wearing? Is it even from the Civil War? Thanks so much for your advice. Smile

...Looks like military academy such or possibly British and or Prussian...designed Confederate. This is not my particular expertise......but we have many here who might give you a response...so be patient and  I thank you for an honest inquiry and welcome you here. The key is to investigate the name of the photographer and seek further info. Who were they where were they etc.....

Thanks for the leads- I'll keep investigating. I'm running into problems tracking down the photographer, but I've found some old cabinet cards and CDVs that look like early volunteer militia, or musician soldiers/officers that look somewhat similar. I'll check into the military school angle. I very much appreciate your advice!

He looks a bit old for a cadet, but the frogging on his coat was regulation for musicians. It could be post Civil War as i'm not familiar with the name of the photographer

He might be a Marine bandsman. They wore red coats with similar frogging

Great pic- thanks for the post. Those are really sharp uniforms! You're right, there is a lot of similarity to the uniform the man in my photo is wearing.

BTW, I'm getting seriously addicted to this forum... Can't believe how much you guys know!
