I have read in some Persian websites that Academic dress which is worn at University Graduation Ceremonies in all around the world, except Iran (!!), is in fact a type of Medieval Persian clothing and the reason behind it is for respecting "Avicenna", a Persian physician and philosopher.

Gowns of this type were widely-worn by the elite in medieval Europe as protection from the cold. They are still worn by modern-day priests in the form of the cassock
