I guess you could call me a "Ripperphile" or something, but this has always fascinated me.  I've read everything about this I could get my hands on when I was a kid.
 
I saw the Nat. Geo special on this.  I recorded it actually.  Having seen it 3 times now, I think the man has it right.

Chances are we'll never know the truth. However, a suspiciously similar murder occurred in Bloomsbury several years earlier. A young woman brought a mysterious foreigner home. In the night he slashed her throat, stole her money and left a half-eaten apple by the sink. The chaplain of a German merchant ship was suspected but acquitted due to lack of evidence. He left with his ship and was never brought to justice

We will likely never know for sure, but I think he's right.  The interviews with the cops in the US were what convinced me they had the guy.  That and the detective couldn't find any similar cases after the man was arrested and hanged.
