excuse my poor english:)
I need to know when, and possibly where, mitraille ammunition (cannister?) was first used in the West
 
afaik artillery was first used in Spain in 14th century, in the West

not what I meant.
I know mitrailleuse was an early french machinegun

I am looking for when and and where a anti infantry ammunition for cannons was first used.
It was called "cannister" in napoleonic era, or so it was called in wargaming manuals, but I doubt it was not used before.

My mistake you might then check this article to see if can assist you. If not then I recommend you contact the US Army Field Artillery School and question the liason office.
