If this thread will include Native American Indians, I will nominate Red Eagle, the great Creek/Cree leader who led Andy Jackson to fame.

Please read;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Weatherford

I might well have some relationships with him? Weatherford is a family name!

Sorry to interfer with this thread but it did look dead!

A better title of this post could have been "The Greatest Hindu Rulers of all time ..."

How come nobody's mentioned Akbar yet? Not the fishman, the 16th century emperor who conquered the Hindus. As a Muslim, he believed everyone was free to practise their faith and built a special hall for religious-debate, despite accusations by his rivals he had forsaken Islam

Because he won his war either by coincidence or by cheating . For example --- 1-- 2nd war of Panipat -- he was 13 year old at that time and army was under the command of Bairam khan . 2-- Asirgarh campaign ---  won by bribe and  cheating . 3-- Kashmir --- won by cheating . 4-- Afganistan , Bengal and Bihar --- won by Maan Singh 5-- Mewar -- Akber couldn't  win it even after his best efforts .

His solo glorious achievement was victory of Gujrat and suppression of revolt  in which he used ' speed ' and ' rumor ' as war strategy .

Cheating is a perfectly acceptable way of winning a war. Chivalry died long before the Middle Ages ended

Ranjit Singh himself led many battles including the battles of Sikh-Afghan War. Please check the writings of contemporary writer Qadiryaar. (if you have any proof that Ranjit Singh didn't lead any battle, please paste the link here)

Jhala Man Singh, Raja Ram Singh Tomar of Gwalior, Bhim Singh Dodia, Kesa Charan, Jaisa Charan, Bhama Shah and Panja Bhil were Maharana Pratap's warriors. (so no exception)

One of the greatest military leaders of India who gets almost no attention is Yashwantrao Holkar.

He decisively defeated the British at the Battle of Bharatpur and convinced the British to accept peace on his own terms. No one else had been able to do that in India. He also recognized the importance of artillery in 19th century warfare and personally oversaw the large-scale manufacture of cannons at Bhanpura. He suddenly died in 1811 (he was only 35 years old) while preparing an army of 100,000 soldiers to attack the East India Company Headquarters at Calcutta.

If anyone is deserving of the title "Napoleon of India", it is him.

Ranjit singh led many battles but always from the back sorrounded by his personal gorcharra guards.I donot remember reading anywhere that if he took active part in the thick of any  battle of Sikh- Afghans and any warrior of repute fell under his sword.Or if he sufferred any wounds.May be in his younger days while fighting with other misls and lesser enemy.Sure he led his army many times to the battle field. He did play a little active part in Nowshera pannua though.Maharana Partap was just the opposite.

Akbar and Ranjit Singh were fighting to expand their empire and Maharan Pratap is fighting for his survival... circumstances were different in both the cases..

You can find more info about this great warrior here...If only the other kings of the time had the guts to stand with him the history would have been different..Battle of Bharatpur is considered to be the pinnacle of his military success. He also had several other skirmishes with British where he turned up victorious. I wish I could find an animated map of the Battle of Bharatpur..but sadly can't find it anywhere..

I think the greatest Indian warrior was Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for the following reasons -

a) He established a Maratha kingdom from a small Jagir at Pune inherited from his father
b) The Maratha kingdom was established by Shivaji when most of Maharashtra was controlled by Adilshah, Nizamshah and other Bahamani Kingdoms existed in Karnataka.
c) He had to face the full might of Mughals from North as well.  He fought them off and kept the kingdom intact.
d) When the Bahamani kingdoms were defeated and taken over by Mughals, only Marathas kept fighting the Mughals.
e) He, during his last days, after coronation, invaded South India and established a base there which helped later Maratha kings after his death to establish their base and fight the Mughals and regain the Maratha kingdom.
f) He established a Navy which kept the English, Portugese and Siddis in check.

In terms of agression samudragupta defeated many kingdoms in various battles and is said to be undefeated.A whole stone pillar inscription of allahabad is dedicated to him.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allahabad_Stone_Pillar_Inscription_of_Samudra_Gupta - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allahabad_Stone_Pillar_Inscription_of_Samudra_Gupta

We can only speculate what chandragupta  maurya must have done because we find his acheivements only in books.
In terms of defending native culture of india Vijayanagar empire comes to my mind.
