Or we will change the rules and or pressurize individuals.
In the UK (and US I believe) there is a fun programme called Strictly Come Dancing.
It involves a professional dancer teaming up with a celebrity in ballroom dancing. A couple is eliminated each week and an ultimate winner appears.
Professional Judges mark and comment on the celebrities' capabilities. The wider TV audience al so have 50% of the marks and phone in and vote.
Unfortunately for the BBC they don't like the way the public are voting because their votes are keeping in the worst (by his own admission) dancer. However he is not some individual wishing to make a name for themselves, who try every histrionoc trick (little tear trickling down, wide eyed 'Oh thank you ' etc). He is however fun, laughs at himself and enjoys the show.
The judges both at the time and in various reported articels intervies etc have roundly condemned him and effectiviely castigated the public for supporting him
So he has been 'forced' to withdraw.
Note this is an entertainment programme NOT a major professional competition
Seems the powers that be in too many walks of life only want a public vote when they can be sure it will go their way. Democracy seems to be on the way out.

Indeed, just look at the Lisbon Treaty here in Ireland. Although I very inenthusiastically supported it, it lost in a referendum and the government want to re-introduce a vote on it. They have past form in this with the Nice treaty, and we voted it in the second time. Perhaps Strictly Come Dancing should just keep scrapping the public will and continually re-introduce voting until they come up with the 'correct' decision? ------------- |
