Saib Tabrizi. a Persian poet of the Indian style, says: Daste niaz ke pishe kasan koni deraz It is dificcult to translate it into English exactly, anyway he says "When you stretch your hand to beg, you have in fact built a bridge that your honour crosses it." (you lose your honour) -------------

If we are choosing from our own cultural tradition, I figure I could use a quote from Hávamál ("words of the high one"), an Old Norse collection of maxims and sayings. One paragraph goes: "The unwise man is awake all night, and ponders everything over; when morning comes he is weary in mind, and all is a burden as ever." A simple advice this one, but seems impossible to carry through with in practice. ------------- |

I liked this one. Anyway, the translation is good, but the 'it' is redundant there. Does he also say how to make my honour come back?? One comes to mind: ''Never tease a cobra with a bare foot.'' - my philosophy teacher? Acutally, she claimed it be a Mongolian proverb, but I doubt. It's probably another of her jokes.  The original goes like this: ''Neser kobru bosou nohou.'' Quite a useful advice, I think.
