It's good but in general work same as XP the difference in appearance like Icons,themes,colour scheme as well as new useless feature like sleep,windows super fetchwindows ready drive,etc.

I have a new Vista laptop and it has problems with my RTW Chivalry mod, however the Invasio Barbarorum mod works fine. One complaint I have against Vista is that it is slower due to the immense security. it will take a lot of your ram memmory so upgrading to either 2 or 1.5 gig of ram is recommended.

Starcraft works fine just the begining screen is a little glitchy. But I have vista it works fine especially since my specs suck. 1gb of ram 2.2ghz amd athlon 64 But hey I got vista for free, and its not too bad everything is a little bit faster. |

I have it on my system running along with XP and I really would like to suggest you that you just don't waste your money on Vista until you may get updates and support for XP from MicroSoft.
As Vista is nothing else but a finer layout of XP, as said while being a game nut you will require more Memory (RAM) as most of the small procedures and programs of Vista itself take much of the Free space of your memory so while playing a game that requires more of hardware, then you will find the experience very boring.
If you are not a gamer and just use PC for daily works and other small user and have some extra money that you want to spoil then go for it.
I have a system of:
Intel 2.0 Ghz Dual Core
1 GB Kingston Ram
320 GB Segate SATA 2 Harddisk
256 MB Nvidia Geforce 7600 GS SLi Graphic Card
and still face problems while playing games such as MTW, RTW, RoN Rise of Legends and some other games.

A friend of mine swears by Linux and it all looks better than windows (then again what isn't?) but the main problem I can see with it is the need to have to always download linux versions of app's cause most things are only made for windows and mac. ------------- |

My Vista is good, but annoying. It asks for permission to do just about anything... I'm thinking to myself, "If I initiated the program, then 'yes' you bastard, you have permission to do it, so do it already!" but the security is nice. Cheers. |

IN terms of games you have major issues. Supposedly it's better, and it does do a few things well. However, it has major issues with its sound at the moment that completely stuff over many games including Bioshock, lots of Source games and more. Installing Medieval 2 Total War: Kingdoms is a real bitch too.

It also takes some getting used to the new vista versions of excel and word - no 'open' botton in excel! Definitely a step backwards as far as usability is concerned. |

Let me give you a good idea:
If knowing all the negative points of Vista and you are still interested to have a taste of it why don't you try a transformer.
Here is one which will make your XP look just like a Vista while the Kernal running still would be of XP, all the looks and GUI of Vista would be achieved.
This is how your Vista will look after the installation of the transformer.

pretty much as everybody said, No to Vista. I had it for a while and it crashed tons of times.
Just to give you an idea, a month ago, you can find Windows XP pretty much anywhere here. Now, it has been pulled out and only Vista is available. XP is still a very good operating system that people have to be forced to find only Vista in order to buy the new system!! ------------- D.J. Me old man bought a new laptop with Vista and asked me to set up his Wifi. As far as I'm concerned you can throw vista in the bin.
Much the stuff where you can customize the desktop is gone and the buttons you click too small and you can't make them bigger. You need a magnifiying glass to shut a computer down. The wifi settings don't work on any known router. My opinion is that Vista is running faster and is having not bug problems like XP.
In hardware-solicitating games is also faster than XP and the interface is very nice. Also, it seems that you haven't setted the BIOS, is not becoming slower like XP is doing ( I don't know to set the BIOS, I'm lazy to learn things I don't like). I would never turn to XP. -------------  |

It seems to me that unless you use your OS for networking and some other related uses, Vista is not really an option. For Christ's sake, why do you need an extra bloody 512 Meg of Ram to run the fancy skins and stuff when you can actually just hack your machine to run a vista theme anyway? I would stick with XP, but given the time, I would certainly switch to a Linux distro. Windows just seems to eat up so much power and in many cases, be so inefficent. The Linux GUI and most Unix-kernel-based OS's have a much better interface for the average user. ------------- |

I'm forced to use Vista at work and it's total garbage. Blue screen of death is replaced by annoying repetitive prompts of "allow or deny" that freeze your computer and make you think that you're doing something wrong when all you're doing is trying to install updates. Many programs have to be run in "administrator" mode through a separate menu even if you have an admin account on the computer. Other programs won't run at all even though Microsoft says they're compatible with Vista. I'm basically using a virtual installation of XP half the time to be able to use those programs. Oh yes, you can play crysis and the windows are translucent and you can have cooler wallpapers and screensavers. But if you plan on using your computer for work, stay away from Vista. I think you can set Vista to not ask all that permissions (I was not interested to do that yet). Most of the programs rules on Vista well.
Vista is a step forward, like Windows was when appeared, the fact some programs are not working is a small sacrifice. I tried XP after using Vista many months and clearly XP is much slower. ------------- |

Are you on Bill Gates's payroll Menumorut?  I'm unable to use Solidworks on Vista. I basically do all my work in Solidworks. Other people in my company sometimes do manage to use Solidworks on Vista, but then they sometimes can't run AutoCAD on Vista. Other times we all get random error messages telling us that no printer drivers have been installed and so nothing can print. Those aren't "small sacrifices." There's a reason why many workstations and business computers are still shipping with XP pro even though Vista business has been available for 2 years. Oh and most current games run just as fast on XP as on Vista, usually faster on XP because the drivers for it have been optimized so much over the years. XP's still faster in business apps too. You say that you cann't work with Solidworks but your coleagues can. What should I understand?
All other arguments are not grounded. Is very important when using the computer to feel good with it and if VIsta is faster or only seems that, it make you feel good and that results in higher eficiency. Anyway, I remain at my opinion that Vista is realy better. Microsoft have made some mistakes, but when is about a new edition of Windows, it cann't have got wrong. Is true that many software producing corporations are tending to release versions of their packages more often than necesary, but I don't feel is the case with Vista. Some weeks I feeled the same disconfort using Vista and returned to XP, than I feeled Vista is better, you should use it more to understand. ------------- |

I used 2000 until only a couple of years ago when I upgraded to XP. I will leave it a while before I upgrade to Vista (despite the fact that members of my household are on the bill gates payrole and we already have the software). Why? Exactly because of what Spartan said: New OSes needs some time to get the bugs straightened out. Wait until a couple of Service Packs are released. As for those touting an upgrade to Linux. I have been using linux for 3 years now, and I can say that while in some areas linux is far superior to windows. In other areas it is far behind. If you think it was hard trying to setup wi-fi on Vistra try it on Fedora. I have got to a point where I have to have both OS's installed because niether will do what I want it to do. MacOS may be a solution. As its a unix distrib pushed by a major company. ------------- |

Gates & Co. are planning a new OS - soon!!!ll Stay with XP until the new system comes out then decide. A lot of my older games will not run on Vista - at all. They ran great on XP. Remember the old bromide: if it ain't broke - don't fix it. P
