So, which do you prefer as a pet?

I prefer dogs.

Are we talking about domestic here (I guess you could have wild cats/dogs as petsWink)? I imagine so. In that case, it is an extremely hard decision for me!! I love Birmans, Ragdolls and Burmese cats (and a few others) ... but I have a Golden Retriever...I went with dogs purely because of my Goldy, they are just so affectionate and loyal. Congratulations Adalwolf, on warping my mind - very hard choice Smile

I have a cat myself. I recently taught him to dial 911 in case of an emergency and he actually caught on pretty quick lol. I like dogs too, but cats are just more easier to deal with, they are cleaner and dont need to be walked everyday.

After having 3 yorkies(at the same time) I swore I would never own a dog again. However my girlfriend has coerced me into getting a pug at the end of the summer. I'm actually quite excited though I feel the care taking aspect(walking, bathing, nail trimming, etc) will fall heavily on me and not my girlfriend. I prefer cats. Always have always will. My last 2 cats lived to 17 and 19 and were actually a bit of an emotional loss when they passed away.

That's pretty cool - may I ask what method/incentive you used in the training, I'm always on the lookout for different ways to train cats Smile
I personally chose to work in the cattery rather than kennels when given the option, when I worked at a kennels/cattery 'resort'Wink. Cats are cleaner, easier to work with, can be very affectionate. My favourite are Birmans and Burmese. Big%20smile. As I said, a very hard choice between cats and dogs...Unhappy

CATS! CATS! CATS!

Cats are independent and still affectionate. They welcome you and aprecciate attention, but when you are busy or away, they cope just fine. They are clean, tidy, calm and composed.

Dogs on the other hane need constant attention, training, groomin etc. They get depressed when you go to bed, they get leaving anxiety when you go to work and they stop eating when you go on holiday. Their whole world revolves around you, which must make them the most pathetic species in the world... Big%20smile

I can live with some dogs though... The ones bigger than rats that is...

Both cats and dogs have breeds to accommodate for people with different lifestyles and ages.
For elderly people, lap dogs are a good because they can live inside, are small (less food needed and can sit on your lap) and don't need as much exercise.
Cats are probably better for the elderly though, as they are less exercise demanding, do not as a general rule require as much attention and care, and love to curl up on the owner's lap to keep them warm. Ragdolls are the perfect cat for this in my opinion, they are so fluffy and gentle.
Dogs are great for people with disabilities. Golden Retrievers and Labradors especially. Their passive nature and keen intelligence allows them to serve as excellent guide/helper dogs. I don't know of the use of 'guide-cats', but would love to hear if there were such thing.
For lively families with children, dogs are often best choice, but cats can fill the spot just as easily, depending on the breed. Dogs like Border Collies and most 'gundogs' (spaniels, viszlas, retrievers.etc) are good family pets, as well as 'toy' and 'terriers'. New hybrids are great too, like the cavoodle and labradoodle. Some cat breeds love to play (even fetch and ball) with their owners, and are quite active and demanding, rather than the generic cat which just sleeps all day. Birmans and Burmese are typical of this - active and friendly, but not overly demanding, and tidy too. Siamese and Korats can go a little overboard, and Siamese are very loud!
On farms and for working, well there is no competition really. Working dogs (collies, kelpies, sheepdogs.etc) are ideal, while cats, I don't see them as very fit for herding cattle.
In conclusion, it is very individual based, which you prefer. There is a specific dog/cat breed for everyone I reckon. I must stress that I am not biased either way too! I love both cats and dogs Approve(just not all breeds of cats and dogs...) I apologise for my spiel.

I voted for Dogs and I can't believe I did it because I used to be petrified of them as a little girl. I got jumped and knocked over by an over friendly labrador when I was 3 and for about 10 years I had an irrational fear of dogs.

I'm a 20 year old woman now and the proud owner of Lab-Border Collie cross called Homer. We got him from an animal shelter and I can't imagine not having him now. Dogs are just so much more affectionate and loving than cats and have great personalities too!

I preffer cats. They are more portable :) For dogs you need more space to keep them in good condition, and they produce more "contaminants" :):)

Besides, in intelligence they are about the same, I believe. I mean, close to nothing :)

Dogs are surely smarter and much more loyal than cats but they need alot much maintenance and their sizes are too big sometimes and they dont fit as house pets.  while cats are smoother cuter and dont require full attention.
plus i am living with cats since childhood.

Perhaps you have heard the old saying Aelfgifu: "Cats have servants, Dogs have masters"- only a fool subordinates him/herself to an animal. Furtheremore aside from the afore mentioned cat wool industry domesticated cats are pretty much useless, whereas thier are a variety of jobs varius dogs can perform.

The saying is untrue. Dogs are extremely depandant on their masters. You have to arrange your life around them: vacations, working hours everything has to be fit in such a way so you can still be home in time to walk it three times a day.

Cats on the other hand cope just fine when you come home late, and will not hold a grudge like a dog will. If you forget dinner one time, they will find their own and still like you, whereas dogs will be hurt.

You have to adapt your life to a dog, but a cat adapts its life to you. So who is the servant here?

A cat is a companion, a dog is a burden, that should be the saying.

Actually that's a misquote knights, the animal rights activist who said that, was trying to prove a point, as the previous year a Sloth Bear cub who was rejected by his mother was euthanized by the Leipzig zoo and the courts held that it would be innapropriate for humans to raise the animal, he was merely saying that under that ruling the Berlin zoo should have euthanized Knut.

It was more a knock against Leipzig than against the Berlin zoo officials.

Of course that is how it is for those who live in the urban environments. Whereas those that live in rural places don't have that problem with their dogs since you go out for the day you just let the dogs run around the farm. And vacations? You mean you don't have others feed your cat when you go out for a couple of days?

Dogs only appear hurt, because dogs live in the moment. They have an extreme pack mentality and the only thing they want is to be part of "the group" this means that they'll forget every wrong done against them as long as their masters show affection on occasion. In the wild when wolves are rejected by a pack they consider their group, they will keep returning and allow themselves to get attacked sometimes to death just so they aren't alone.

True, it is different in the countryside. But we are now officially living in a time when more people live in the city than in the country... Wink
You do have to feed the cat, but that is all you have to do. Just ask the neighbour. You cannot leave the dog alone for days with just a feeding. It'll go nuts.

Like I said: pathetic. Cats just flash the 'well f*** you too' attitude and go and find some companions that do like it. Like me...

I completely agree with you Zagros. From working at the cattery my personal favourite cats are Burmese and Birmans. They are just the most lovable, friendly, playful and cutest things! Tis also true about how they love to play "fetch" and enjoy interacting with humans. I would have a Birman or Burmese over any dog in some situations, however, some dogs I just can't go pass (Golden Retriever...Smile)

Well, you can't take a cat to the park and play football or have it wrestle with your kids without them needing hundreds of sutures to close up their wounds... Dogs are more 'all-terrain' IMO.

Cats actually have superior hand-eye coordination to dogs, and are thus technically "better" at playing football. However, cats do not fancy that type of thing, while dogs being the social and energetic things they are, tend to love football. Lions, tigers and other big cats are surprisingly adept at playing with soccer and large plastic balls. They use their paws like gloves/bats to keep the ball under control, and are very good at dribbling Smile

I have had cats and dogs and honestly I can't make up my mind which I prefer.  Both have positive aspects as well as negative.  Its hard to explain but from my personal experience I would liken a dog to a less intelligent extremely happy and loyal friend, who loves to play. (if I didn't make it clear not as in a person) Cats on the other hand are more reserved, crafty and deep thinkers, they aren't as reckless but more cautious, but just as friendly and as mentioned more independent, they don't really need you like a dog does but enjoy your company.  I think the reason a dog is more dependent on you is because of the bond they make with you, ex. their loyalty.  (it may sound odd but this is what comes to mind observing their body language)  My vocabulary isn't what it used to be so this is rather difficult to express.  Right now I have a bird which is the most animated and has the most personality of any pet I have ever had.

There's an old Hindi saying about this:  Dogs pray that their masters get richer so that they will buy more food for them.  Cats pray that their masters go blind so that they can steal as much food from them as they want.

I dunno. cats have never struck me as antisocial or arrogant, just less needful of interaction. Have you ever met someone who'll have a long conversation with someone, but doesn't feel the need to do that kind of thing constantly, and rather feels that continual interaction is a perk, not a necessity?

Australia has a national dog story. During the 1850's there was a great push inland to settle recently opened land and most traveled by bullock wagon. They took hampers of food with for refreshment on the long journey called a tuckerbox. One bullock driver got his wagon stuck in the nearby Murrumbidgee river. He left is dog to guard his food and went to get his bullocks out of the mud. Sadly the man slipped and drowned. But the dog continued to wait and refused to move away from the box until death. The locals were so impressed by the story of the faithful dog they built a monument "the dog on the tuckerbos" that is still there today.
