Hi all. I wanted to know how restricted peoples movements were between different countries in middle ages as compared to today.

I think peoples movements were restricted on a local rather than a national level. Traveling was expensive, and only the rich could afford to ever go further than the next village or market town.
On a national level, there would not have been official customs or something, but travelling through a town, across a bridge or through someones land would often cost tolls. These would generally not be lievvied by a central authority like the king but by the local lord or town council. -------------

Besides it depends where and when.
MA are 1000 years long so of course things were different. For instance, Charlemagne had a few custom entries but Henri VII's budget depended at 50% on it...
Besides, you had times and places where crossing the borders was just not an option. See for instance during the plagues. But on average, with less than 2% of the population involved in civil service, keeping the borders was just not an option (not mentionning that the actual idea of border came very late but I wouldn't know exactly when. ------------- I am a free donkey! |
