Hi all. I wanted to know how restricted peoples movements were between different countries in middle ages as compared to today.

I think peoples movements were restricted on a local rather than a national level. Traveling was expensive, and only the rich could afford to ever go further than the next village or market town.
On a national level, there would not have been official customs or something, but travelling through a town, across a bridge or through someones land would often cost tolls. These would generally not be lievvied by a central authority like the king but by the local lord or town council.

Besides it depends where and when.
 
MA are 1000 years long so of course things were different. For instance, Charlemagne had a few custom entries but Henri VII's budget depended at 50% on it...
Besides, you had times and places where crossing the borders was just not an option. See for instance during the plagues. But on average, with less than 2% of the population involved in civil service, keeping the borders was just not an option (not mentionning that the actual idea of border came very late but I wouldn't know exactly when.
