Dear All,

I have visited the said Rama's bridge near Rameshwaram. I went there last year. Though the place is historically and religiously so important there is no sign board or organised tourism to this place. We had to go asking local residents on the way.

Once we reach the near by area (there is a newly built small hanuman temple) we have to take a motor boat to venture a kilo meter into the sea to reach Rama Sethu. Reaching there exactly was not a great experience, since there were no organised facility. I was told that a good view of the sethu can be had during low tide times and especially during the nights or early mornings, I had chosen such a time to visit the place.

Once I reached the actualy Sethu Site, I was astonished and was in loss of words. The bridge should be easily 40-50 feet wide (the visible part) and made of huge stones. For a nor logical mind it certainly does not seem to be a geographical phenomenon. It certainly looks like a man made structure. Atleast that is was the structure of the bridge suggests. I was absolutely amazed and my curses for the governement authorities turned unparliamentary, for ignoring, and even thinking of destroying such a wonder.

I need people who are into archeology to help me in organising some archeological work to be done there (similar to that of Bet Dwaraka). This has to be done immediately since the dreging work had started but stopped because of initial failure.

I also need information of any archeological work done on this earlier.

The existing structure is going to be cut or removed under the Sethu-Samudhram Project by dredging work, according to the reports.

The involvement of archaeologists here would not be encouraged by the State government, as it has decided to proceed with the above project. Though, locally, a religious-head filed a petition, the Magistrate dismissed holding that the structure was not historical important or something like that. The media has totally suppressed the proceedings.

For carrying out “Dwaraka-type” under water excavation, crores of rupees are required, which cannot be expected from the present government. Even NIO had to wind up the Kaveripumpattinam excavation, because of the no-provision of funds by the State government.

Dear Shri Rao,

I have seen those URLs before also and felt there were not much of archeological conclusions there.

I know it would not be in the government's interest to make a study there. Day before yesterday the central ministry has formally given a statement to the parliament that there are no alleged historical evidences for this bridge. Leave alone rama's connection, or even a man made bridge, the structure has immense importance as a scientific study which is now going to be destroyed.

I was greatly depressed when NIO pulled back from Poompuhar (kaveripoompatinam). We should never repeat the mistake. Infact, we should also push the current state government which boasts of Tamil Development to allot funds for this.

If atleast a journalisitic report along with a small evidence (like dating a rock) can be gathered from the site, it would create a stir and hold back the operations till some conclusions are drawn.

If you wish, we could do something together.

The "Rama's bridge" as mentioned in the old maps was changed by James Rennel as "Adam's Bridge" and the fact can be verified from the old maps of India.

The Indian politicians too indulge in such fabrication. See how they are fighting in the parliament for the "Maritime Univrsitry" Bill!
