books about history but with a fantasy at it like an american empire occured and then the people in that empire began to revolt and then they used tanks with steam engines ------------- |

hmm, if ur really into fictional historical fiction i'll give you something, but it has a strong side of tactical war, sumerge urself in declassified defense strategies of other countries, let me try to look for some. -------------

I don't know if it meets your standards, but I recomend you ''Fatherland'' by Robert Harris. It's a about a murder investigation in occupied by nazi's europe in the 60's. -------------  Give me a place to stand and I will move the world.

If I get the picture correctly, you want "Alternative History/Present/Future" books, not Historical Fiction.
In that case, I would recommend "The Memorandum of Aachen", by Andrew Roberts. The story of how Germany finally conquers Europe in the next few years.
