yes but how does a pidgeon know wich direction it must fly if it is never been there and wich city or castle it must bring its letter ------------- |

Pigeons dont fly to where they born, but to where home is, they will make exceptions at the approach of dusk when they will follow other pigeons to shelter. If that be where they are born then so be it. Pigeons are most definitely aware of the earth's magnetic fields, have very good sight, mark landmarks in general flight and have a good memory. Muslims have generally had a great tradition of pigeons as carriers and a number of famous palaces and forts had pigeon holes built into the walls, to receive them back. ------------- |

What do you mean  it was just a question the post pigeons seem to me just a myth I wanted to be certain unles what I think is they drove with the pigeon al the way from place to place and then it could fly back up and down to the same place ------------- |

No, they do not understand commands. They just fly back home. So if you want to send a message to Berlin, you need a pidgie from Berlin. You take it with you to somewhere else, tie a message to it and let it go. The pigeon will fly back to where it came from, and whoever keeps the pidgies in Berlin will be able to get the message.
We used to have pidgeons at home. Lots of them, as they are extremely hard to get rid of. When there were too much we would give them away to others, but they kept coming back. One time we gave away two small chicks with the father to take care of them. The father cared for them until they were big enough, and the came back to us, almost a month later. They are like boomerangs.
 There are whole organisations of pigeon keepers who breed homing pidgeons for sport. They will take a lot of pidgeons to the other side of Europe and let them go, and whoever's pidgeon makes it home first wins. I've heard that a prizewinning homing pidgeon can be worth over 20.000 euros.

Anyone knows since when are pidgeon used for communication?
Since the Middle Ages, Rome, Greece or what.

Although i have no sources for it i believe they were also used onboard ships and boats. It may have been Barbary or Ottoman seamen. ------------- |

thats interesting but it is a bit difficult to take your pigeon from one place to the other to use it as a post messenger and if that somebody moved to an other place it couln't follow it any more
