A short piece of traditional music - I won't call it Greek or Turkish - you decide.

It's a traditional Anatolian lullaby, performed by somebody of Anatolian origin, and Turkish words are heard.

The instrument, called "santouri" in Greek, is of Persian origin.

An image of Istanbul appears behind the stage often...

The instrument looks awesome I've never seen one before is it common in Greece?, the singing voice/style is reminicent and similar to some Turkish ballad's, sounds lovely and very moving.

If you want just say to me to send you some very good Sfakianakis links!!!

This instrument is called santouri, common in the islands and was common in Minor Asia(where this "miracle-kid" Areti Ketime is from(her grandparents I mean).
This song and melody is nanourisma-cradlesong and its panhellenic,it is sang by mothers and grandmothers to lull the kids...It sound very simiral to some byzantine hymns.

I found some samples of santouri:

In Iranian (especially Kurdish & Persian) traditional music it is very common.

It is the ancestor of the piano.

It is called the Santoor.

I have never seen the Chinese version, but there are several styles - the use of this instrument is diverse around the Iranian geographical area (various tribes and people using it). How diverse is it in the Far East? If it is limited only to China then it is probable that it definitely is Near Eastern in Origin.

The only similar Chinese instrument I can think of has the strings plucked rather than hit with the hammer, though I don't know what it is called.

Something interesting: it's a lullaby but some lyrics are about children being taken away... Cry

Topic changed from "Greco-Turkish music" to "Greco-Turkish music & dance".

Video (below) of some dances of Cappadocia, Turkey.
First minute is boring, until the girls start the more coordinated/interesting motions.
Costumes are nice.
At 2:55 music & dance tempo increase.
At 3:40 music changes & 2 men start some war dances with daggers.
At 4:45 swords are used.
At 5:50 music changes again & groups of men & women start a religious dance that begins slow & gets faster.

Now that's culture, tradition. I find the posturing through the dagger ritual very similar to caucasian(from caucases) posturing in their dances.

Karakaçan have a few meanings: "Those who flee to snow" is one meaning. Another meaning may be"the black runner". However it's mostly used as a common name given to donkey in TurkeyTongue.

The "black-kara" its seems to exist since they wore black fustanellas and the tradition says that they started to wear black after the fall of Polis when they started to flee to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agrafa - Agrafa mountains to escape from the slavery.
So the Ottomans called them(and one of my ancestors) so and thats how they are known when they spread to all over Balkans.

Thanks kotumeyil

Infact I dont see resemblance.  this is most weird horon, I ever saw. I am sure greeks have other type of horons too. Infact difference is too normal, horon changes even from one village to another one. I am curious about root of this dance.

Neoptolemos,

Do you have new pontus greek singers? I mean these are old. did pontus greeks asimilated by greece greeks?

Assimilated? Hmm, all Greeks (i.e. Epirotans, Macedonians, Cretans, Peloponneseans etc) have been/are being "assimilated" to an extend to the mainstream Greek culture. For example we all listen to 'laika' and western-style pop songs,  we all speak the same language (or rather dialect) more or less, which means that local dialects and accents are gradually fading away, we dress the same way and so on. At the same time, however, we keep (and will continue keeping) some of our region-specific cultural elements alive. For example there are some customs that you only find them in some parts of Greece.
Going now to music, all regions of Greece have their traditional music, folk dances, different prime instruments etc. Those are kept alive. The same is happening with the Pontians. They keep their music and dances and they don't forget their roots. So there are new greek-pontian singers. Of course if you ask me to name them I can't, just like most of Greeks here won't know singers who sing Epirotika (traditional songs from Epirus). I know though people with pontian roots who are in the mainstream music industry.

Per tradition some links:)
Dancing pontians in Athens  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPhthRTHcFw - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPhthRTHcFw
Dancing group in Katerini, Macedonia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPE0htkKTJg - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPE0htkKTJg
Celebration in Nea Makri, Athens http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lkRaeLzaws - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lkRaeLzaws

And to more from weddings:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u27kh-JzIW0 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u27kh-JzIW0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CA5JdINri0 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CA5JdINri0

One of my cousins got married to a woman with pontian roots. At the wedding party (in Athens) they had music (live of course:) from both Epirus and Pontos. I'm telling you, when pontians start dancing they don't stop... they humiliated us! We had an excuse though; they were many more LOL

Also in the Greek country (not in the cities) they shoot in the air during the weddings the only thing is changing is the gun .In Crete are using kalasnikof in the other areas just  simple shotguns.

Big smileLOL Now that's fun, there's nothing like a good air shooting but only for people who know how to use one. I'm tired of the critics, they watn to stop everything LOL

This Garadenizli I know told me that he and his uncles sometimes go to the highest moutain top and shoot their guns into the air  just to hear the echo from the next mountains. Is there such a tradition?

Yes they have their own cretan dialect, which preserves more archaic characteristics.
Cretans consider the guns a must, even the minister of Public Order, who is from Crete, has three guns in his home and not simple guns...

Rempetika.

I guess it can be included here because it was originally performed by Greeks from Smyrna (Izmir) in the 1920's.
The music is about the misfortunes they endured & many of the songs (incliding the 1 below) are about drugs.
