I need solid info about the status of the term "Legation"..

I need information with references and some good definitions...

I know easy-to-find info like it was used before WW II and had been a second rank diplomatic mission

What I need is; today, what is the status of it? Is it equal to an embassy? Can it use the immunities and privileges that embassies have? Or how was that status in history?

References will be great!
