How effective were the Chinese field artillery? I have saw large version of crossbows during the Sung Dynasty, but nothing else.

First time doesn't always mean better...gunpowder has been one of the most effective weapons in the whole time, but also, one of the most dangerous to handle.

"Cannons were used by the Song for the first time in history."

Song  "canons" didn't throw projectiles, they were used to make noise.

Read "shuihuzhuan" known as "water margins"

If you have any proof of what you state quote primary sources

First cannons were used against city walls, not soldiers, during the hundred years war

First Korean cannons (probably the first naval cannons) were used to unleash hell unto wegu(wako- Japanese pirate) ships that were constantly raiding Korean coasts at that time.

Read Osprey's "Siege Engines of the Far East (I)"

Will try and post some of the pictures here later on Song dynasty cannons and Mongol cannons in the 1200s.

The 1st recorded use of firearms on city walls was in the Mongol siege of the strategic city of Xiangyang from A.D. 1268 to 1273.
