My decision is that the tomato is not a fruit...NOR A VEGETABLE!!!! I have no reason to believe that tomatoes actually exsist.

--Have you actually seen a tomato before besides in a salad? No you have not

And for those of you who think they saw a tomato, that was an apple you idiot!!!!!

Point is....."your dead to me" as the honorable Stephen Colbert will say, at the end of his shows

You mean to say that the tomatoes on the burgers I eat aren't really tomatoes, but apples? And that the tomato sauce underneath the toppings on pizza isn't a tomato product at all?

My world is crumbling here, man.

Is the tomato really a fruit?

That is the most asinine question I've ever heard. Everyone knows that tomatoes are actually thinking beings that will kill you if they get the chance. I saw it on a documentary once, then on a cartoon based on the documentary.

Botanically the tomato is a fruit because it is
formed in the ovary at the base of the flower. The
confusion exists because of the difference between
science and cooking.
And some years back someone with too much
free time hooked a galvonometer to a tomato and
decided that it felt pain and therefore said it had the
ability to think.

You are correct. There can be no peace between us and the tomato. I have been warning the world of this for years, but do they listen?!? O, the fools! To whom shall I cry out?!?

And Remember:

1) The tomato is the rat that infests Germany, for did Hitler not write:

Don't lecture me with your "science." Not all scientists agree on the theory that the tomato is a fruit. The documentary I cited above will reveal to you the true evil nature of the tomato. Your magic will not save you when the tomatos attack.

still a question as to what he was actually reading,
emotions? or changes in the electomagnetics of the
plant caused by interrupting the continuity of the skin
covering of the tomato

Ok that hot tomato is really disturbing. First of all, a tomato (if it actually exsists) would not be in a pose like that. It would just be sitting down being immobile. Second, the other pictures are fruits from an unknown and disturbed land (Sudan maybe?) ANyway, i dont "see or smell" the tomato in these pictures.

---Do not send false pictures of "supposed sights" of tomatoes like the lockness monster..hmmmm k??? No more lies!!!!!!

My favourite colours are Blue and Brown.I love all colours.Black won't be possible without white and vice-versa.

Red & Tomatoes remind me of blood.

Blood is life.

Red is also the colour usually worn by Indian brides.

White and black are considered colours of mourning in India.Unthinkable for a Bride to wear them .....in a majority of cases.

Obviously, if white is a color for mourning then something is definitly wrong with the "mourning system." You cant have white while you cry! it is just unconcievable to me and i think all of my friends in redneck country will agree with me.

You have yet to prove tomatoes do not exsist thats because they do. Now you want something that does not exsist - celery does not. It has a negative food value, not taste  there for it does not exsist.

Isnt it amazing to think that tomatoes are a new world fruit. ... ??

They didnt exist in Eurasian cuisine until the 16th c. !!!!!!!!

The same is true of peppers, and the potato.   Man, food in Eurasia must have *sucked* before Columbus.

Also, ever wonder why the tomato and the pepper caught on so well in Eurasia, but the avacado is still thought of as exotic and strictly (south) american?

I imagine it has something to do with ease of cultivation. Not sure though.  Anyone know?

lol we're all arguing about tomatos. For what, for just the sake of arguing. Tomatos are real Ponce de Leon, you're just afraid of them because they haunt you in your dreams. Eveyday your mother wolud feed you tomatos every meal of the day. And you started to hate them. Just a guess.

there are probably dozens of reasons, but one notable one is the high acidity of the tomato made it easier to preserve without refrigeration and canning tech. It also assists in sun drying.

Tomatoes anywhere outside of Southern Europe or the Middle East SUCK.   (Actually, i bet Mexican tomatoes tase pretty good) ....... i pity anyone whose only exposure to the amorous fruit has been through grainy, oversized, tasteless North American varieties.  Ponce, i think maybe thats where youre prejudice is coming from?  ... perhaps?

It must be a case of what you are used to or grew up with, because I have tasted the european and middle east grown tomatos, and they are really awful,  Tough, woody and seedy.  The tomato you are referring to from NA could be of the Hydroponic type.  Pale, tasteless with weak meat. The field grown Jersey tomato[rutgers, beefmaster etc.] is superior to any grown anywhere including  elsewhere in the us. [biased?] of course I am, but accurate also.

BTW- early colonists called them love apples and thought them poisonous

We have to orchestrate a taste test.         This could prove logistically difficult.

The logistics could be worked out.  If they can ship live maine lobsters to germany we can ship tomatos just about anywhere. The rub is, field grown jerseys won't be available until late june early july.  I'm up for it just the same.

Obviously this is another attack from the liberal agenda to make people believe in what they call "the truth." I am not saying that tomatoes do not exsist "per say." I am only saying that the real tomato is not the fruit(vegtable, alien etc.) but the tomato in our hearts. ANd that is what i am trying to let everyone know.

---Also those pictures...they..just offend me as an American.

The article is really long.

I Say Tomayto, You Say Tomahto...

Sam Cox
December, 2000

The United States Congress passed the Tariff Act of 1883, a rather innocuous piece of legislation requiring a 10% tax on imported vegetables, in response to growing international trade. Just a few short years later, a tomato importer evaluated the law closely, and decided to challenge it on the botanical grounds that a tomato was in fact technically a fruit, not a vegetable, and should therefore be exempt from said tax. John Nix's case posed merit enough to land the case before the Supreme Court in 1893. In Nix vs Hedden, 149 U.S. 304 (1893), Justice Gray wrote, "Botanically speaking, tomatoes are fruits of a vine, just as are cucumbers, squashes, beans, and peas. But in the common language of the people...all these are vegetables, which are grown in kitchen gardens, and which, whether eaten cooked or raw, are, like potatoes, carrots, parsnips, turnips, beets, cauliflower, cabbage, celery and lettuce, usually served at dinner in, with or after the soup, fish or meats which constitute the principal part of the repast, and not, like fruits generally, as dessert [1]." The court rejected the botanical truth that the tomato is in fact a monstrously sized berry, and deferred to the culinary vernacular of vegetable to describe it. Thus is tax yet paid on imported tomatoes.
