Tu-chueh was the Chinese rendering of the word Turk or Turk'ut. The Turks were a Mongolian tribe that created a vast empire. Check out the All Empires main site for info on the empire they created (the Gok Turk empire).

They were a Turkic people who created a great steppe empire in the mid-6th century. Their states were destroyed by 744 and they finally disappeared in the 940s. However, their name was used for all the Turkic peoples from then on.

Mongolians and Turks are not the same people. An expression such as " The Turks were a Mongolian tribe" is certainly wrong.

"Mongolian" means any one leaving in Mongolia. The Gktrks lived in
Mongolia so they were Mongols. Mongolian doesn't mean Mongol all the time.
