Christopher Columbus by far. Of any historical figure, I was fascinaed with him the most. When I was kid, me and my friends used to explore the nearby wilderness and we would often pretend to be martime explorers reaching the new world.

When I was a wee sprout, my favorite hero was King Arthur. Sir Thomas Mallory, T.H. White, and Bernard Cornwell all had a lot to do with it, I think. Anyways, when I was about 12 and found out that Arthur wasn't unanimously agreed upon by historians as a real person, I decided my life's work would be to prove he actually was a real historical figure. I was young then, but even today it seems a noble goal. I wish I still held it.

Arthurian mythology has gotten very popular with the whole Grail controversies going on amongst scholars today. There are many historians who do believe Arthur existed, and they're working hard to prove it. I may end up being one of them myself when I graduate from University.

I thought Maxwell Smart (of GetSmart) fame was pretty cool

and Australia's answer to Robin Hood.... Ned Kelly..
he used to steal from the rich and give to the poor.

Maybe living (at one stage, as a young'un) near his birthplace,
Glenrowan and the banks he used to rob, might have also had
an influence.. plus i played his brother Dan in a primary school
play..

His last words were "such is life", just before he was hanged at
Old Melbourne Jail.

I do consider Napoleon as a sort of a hero, at least as close to one as any major political leader can come. That's now though, when I was a kid I didn't really have any "historical" heroes, unless you count Greek and Norse mythological figures. Certain personas I was indoctrinated (at least attempted) with through my awfully Christian elementary school as heroes, such as Jesus, St. Olaf, Moses and King David of Israel. None really stuck however and after reading about the whole Batseba incident I downright disliked David.
