If I remember my European history, in the late 1400's or early 1500's Pope Alexander VI (not sure if he was VI or not, and too lazy to check ) literally divided the world up between Spain and Portugal. And I remember something about the Treaty of Tordesillas. Anyways, I know that's vague, I hope it answers your question. Either that or give you a lead to look it up on the net.
