Denmark is considered the oldest monarchy worldwide with an unbroken line of Kings for more than 1000 years. The first "official" king was Gorm the Old (died 958), but as early as year 700, Angantyr ruled vast areas of todays Denmark.

Danube Bulgaria as a state was formed in 681 AD, although there were multiple Bulgarian Haganates before that.  Anyways, it was formed in 681 after defeating Asparuh defeated a Byzantine army and Byzantium acknoledged Bulgaria's soverignity.  The goal of most of Bulgaria's rulers at that time was to secure Byzantine lands with Slavs living on them, unifying all the southern Slavs.  In 864, Knias Boris converts the country to Christianity.

In 1018, the Byzantinue ruler Basil II annexed a large Bulgarian state weakened by internal political conflict.  The independant Bulgarian church is assimilated into the Greek Orthox Chruch.

In 1185 Bulgaria reclaims its independance under the leadership of the brothers Asen and Peter.  The Bulgarian Church reemerges as independant also.  Meanwhile, the crusades are  crossing through the Balkans and Anatolia.  The Crusaders pillage and loot through Bulgarian and Byzantine and are chased out of Bulgaria in a decisive battle near Adrianople in 1205 AD.  Afterward, the Tatar invasion left Bulgaria in a weakened state, and with considerably less lands.  The weakened state fought with the Ottoman Turks for about 100 years, until on the 25th of September, 1396, the Turks crushed the Christian Bulgarians near Nicopolis.  The Bulgarians fall into a 500 year long opression by the Ottomans.

During the 1877-1878 Russo-Turkish war, the Bulgarians were freed and received autonomy.   In 1885, Eastern Rumelia was unified with Bulgaria to form a more complete Bulgarian state.

Following two World Wars on the losing side, Bulgaria suffered losses of lands.  With the Red Army in Bulgaria, a communist government was elected and ruled the country for about 45 years.

In 1991, peaceful democratic elections surprisingly put the Socialist/Communist party back in power, giving Bulgaria a dubious honor of being the only nation to reelect them.

Edit:  Sorry for the length.. I actually just shortened it a little...

England is generally agreed to have come into existence during the reign of Alfred, the Great (871-900 AD). While sections of the country were independantly ruled in his reign by Vikings and Celtics he was the first sole ruler of all the English. Previously there had been 4 English Kingdoms and four kings.

I don't care, it's inaccurate like hell. There are far more states and empires than just 16! One must be either crazy or ignorant to claim something like that.
