Topic: Nader Shah unites the Ottoman Empire with Iranshahr Posted: 26-Aug-2005 at 13:32 |
Discuss how world history would have unfolded had these two great powers of their time been merged and Nader Shah did not become delusional but kept a cool and calculating head.
Central Asia was already part of Nader's conquests.
I believe the British, French and whomever else would have been ousted from India (and great welath would have been amassed from that region), swathes of European Russia would have been added and conquests would have infiltrated much deeper into Central Europe.

I think that such a large empire would have been too difficult to govern. By the time of Nader Shah, both the Ottomans and the Safavids was a had serious problems with corruption. Nader Shah succesful conqueror because of his own genius, but to consolidate such an empire would have taxed even him, let alone expand it. Besides, he's known for his qualities as a miltary leader, not an administrator. As far as Central Europe and Russia... the Europeans were starting to have an edge on the muslim powers by this time. The Habsburgs and the Romanovs had large, excellent armies and by this time had a technological edge on the Safavids.
As for India, while certainly an attractive objective which could be conquered in its entirety, it probably would have been a long protracted war. Even if Nader Shah would have gotten the better of the Moghuls, his successors would not have been able to keep India. His raid on Delhi was one thing, to conquer and consolidate all of India another matter entirely. It might have gained time, but the Europeans would have returned.

They would have been an awesome power, the Ottoman-Safavid issue had been settled before. By the time of Nadir Shah relations were quite good in comparison.
Now let me take it one step further. If the Moghuls, Afsharids, Ottomans formed a union or pact, opened their borders and formed some uber-strong millitary, well...that would be incredible.
Imagine the architecture, a cross between the Taj Mahal, Selimiye and Masjid-i Shah, WOW it would be mind-blowing, play around with the three on photoshop...amazin

Well, Nader Shah tried to reconcile the Sunni-Shia divisions and his aim was to overthrow the Ottoman's and create such an empire.
