Though Frederick I von Hohenstaufen was the first of the rulers of the Heiliges Rmisches Reich to adopt the part of "Holy", I have been wondering what other people think of the Holy Roman Empire and their leaders in general, and who people think is the greatest. Now, I know the Empire lasted nearly millenium, so I shall shorten the list down a bit. Who do you think is the greatest of the Holy Roman Emperors from Otto the Great to Maximilian I, roughly the era of 912 ad to 1519.

There are many underatted leaders of the Holy Roman Empire, and many geat men such as Frederick I, Frederick II, and more.

Personally I like Otto the Great, and I find his famous battle of Lechfeld to be a great achievement for the Empire in stopping the Magyar incursions.

I don't know, if he was the greatest, but Frederik II "Stupor Mundi" has become my personal favourite over the last few months. For reasons further explained here:

Stupor Mundi was the greatest character in medieval Europe but he was not the best ruler of the HRE, he was more of a Sicilian king than a German emperor...don't know who could have been considdered the best...of course i would pick the one who was most significant for the Duchy of Swabia...

Charlemagne out of all of them, but Frederick II out of the Germans alone. Honestly, a man who could speak that many languages is a true marvel, particularly when he could easily have just got interpreters to do it. The way he dealt with the Papacy is simply comical on so many levels, they should not have underestimated the man.

I think that Frederick II Barbarossa was the greatest Holy Roman Emperor, because he battled the Lombard League and he is one of the most famous crusaders who ever lived.

Frederick II for two reasons, one he was just so outrageous compared to the other monarchs of the time.  The fact he had muslims at his court at a time when the crusades were still active is golden.

This is the other reason, he was not going to conform and do what the pope said.

I think sigismund is the greatest holy roman emperor. He spoke several languages and formed the order of the dragons after the battle of nicopolis. He encouraged international trade by abolishing internal duties and regulating tariffs on foreign goods
