The truth is thers no such thing as an Iraqi national identity, the borders where drawn up by westerners and dont mean much, I think it would probably be best to divide the country.

I agree.

But the Turks would be hopping mad if Kurdistan is born in the North. So if the US goes ahead and divides Iraq, then it would mean that they have effectively ended their alliance with Turkey. That would have momentous implications in Central Asia and the Balkans.

The US has generally been careful in disposing off allies. Even Saddam became a foe only after he messed-up bigtime.

I think the US would still like to have Turkey as an ally. It is useful against the Arabs, Russia and China. But if it dumps Turkey, then that could mean Russia emerging as a major ally of the US.

I am not sure where the Turkish army stands in all this. They would be pro-US. Would they seize power in desperation?

I dont understand the fears of a Kurdistan though, if there actually is one than there would be no point in fighting for one and maybe the Turkish Kurds would move there, or soemthing.

Kurdistan could embolden Turkish Kurds. It would also be oil-rich, and US-backed. Hence potential of big trouble for Turkey.

I don't think Turkey will cause too many problems if (Iraqi) Kurdistan becomes independent. If they attack it, they're seriously harming their chances of EU membership.

If it doesn't go like this I'm afraid it'll be a big mess.

What do the Turks have to do still to gain EU membership. Would a creation of an independant Kurdistan and the opening of friendly relations with it benefit Turkey?

An independent Kurdistan in Northern Iraq would be disasterous for Turkey.  The Kurds in turkey would ramp up their terror campaign to try to secede from Turkey to join the new Kurdistan.

I might stand alone on this situation.  I think its too late to make a Kurdistan.  Istanbul, the largest city is already full of Kurds, so Turkey cant just kick all of its Kurds to Kurdistan because they are so settled all over Turkey.  I think ok, give them Kurdistan (even a bit of Turkey), then they should put as many Kurds as possible in it.  If Kurdistan isnt given to the Kurds, then they will just take over Turkey anyway, its projected that Kurds will be the majority by 2050 in Turkey, so any survival for Turks and Turkey to me would mean giving them land and trying so shove as many as you can in there, so at least Turks can survive.

But I guess we will see

Maybe once Turkey becomes Kurdistan in 50 years, Germany will become New Turkey

2050 seems to be the date when all the oppressed minorities will become the majority...
