What have in common Kurds from Kurdistan, extinct Kurs from Courland (Kurland) or Kuru tribe from

India? The answer may seem simple; the same root in their names – kur. There are other examples:

ancient people from Kurile Islands were called kuru, in northeast Poland live Kurps so far. We've got

thisword core also in many geographical names like Kurdufan, Kurajma situated nearby ancient Nuri in

Sudan, Kursk in Russia, Kuroshima in Japan, Kurseong in India but also Kurów or Kurowo in Poland.

'kur' in Ainu language means 'shadow', 'darkness' but also 'man'; in Japanese 'kuru' means 'darkness'

and 'kuro' is 'black'; Korean 'kurim' and Tungusic 'kurunyuk' mean the same: 'soot' and in Mongolian

and Turkish 'kara' is 'black'.

In Basque language 'zakur' is a 'dog'.

And in English:

cur [kз:(r)] – a mongrel (dog of mixed type), especially one that is frightening or fierce; a person who is

thought to be worthless or cowardly

The most popular Polish curse is 'Kurwa mać', I suppose some of you heard it at least once. But when

you analyse these two words they show quite an interesting meaning. 'Kurwa' is a 'woman from Kur

tribe' and 'mać' is old Polish word for 'mother'.

Sumerian myth about Enki and Ninhursag describes primordial waters Kur from the Lower World

that went up to the surface and threatened to cover everything with water causing flood, but they were

kept back by Ninurta, who was the son of Enlil – he put on Kur the pile of stones.

It seems to be connected to the first tumulous or barrow and that root stayed in many languages like

Polish 'kurhan', Russian 'кypгaн'.

Ainu were to derived from the sexual relationship between a princess and a dog (wolf). As it was said

before, English 'cur' means 'mongrel, but also a person who is thought to be worthless'. In Sikhu

tribe they added the expression 'Kaur' after female first name, what translates as 'princess'. Mind also

shells of cowrie (cowry) that were used in many parts of the world not only as money (Africa and

southern Asia) but also for decorative purposes (Kalash people in Pakistan or mountaineers in Poland

near Zakopane). Goddesses Kauri appear in Tibetan Book of the Dead.

In India a sigh of circle, over which there is a cross, is called Kuri and belongs to misteries of god

Wisznu.

One of the most moral Old Prussians (many of them killed by Knights of the Cross in Northeastern

Poland) remained so called 'Pruskie Baby' (Prussian old women) - female figures with a horn made

from stone, found also in other countries.

Brückner writes about goddess Kurko*, 'Kurek' was a figure made probably form the last ears of

corn, carried in the procession during harvest home. Presumed goddess Kurche remainds Polish curse:

'kurcze' and 'kurde' what was at first nothing else than a recalling to the almighty power.

*Finnish 'Kurko' means 'wizard' similar to Estonian 'Kuri'

From KUR to UR

'UR' in Basque means WATER

Earth-universe was called Lurbira, as the element: 'Lurra', 'Luur' or 'Lur' that was connected to ice and

snow ('euria' – rain; 'elurria' or 'elurra' – snow).

Even in the XIIth century Basques called God – Urcia.
