In Australia, New Zealand a couple of other ex British colonies, we drive on the left hand side of the street, which obviously means that our cars are right hand drive. And quite right!! Does anyone know:-
a) How many other countries drive on the left hand side?
b) Why do the rest drive on the right hand side?

Wouldn't it make more sense if everyone drove on the same side of the road, worldwide?

There are several countries that should be both red and blue.  You drive on whatever side of the road you can get on.Big smile

But does anyone know why there are left hand drive and right hand drive countries? It seems to me that to have all cars built with the same controls would be cheaper too.

The answer is the English! They had a lot of control of Japan in the 19th century and were even admired by the Nipponese! You know, royalty and all that!

But that is just my opinion, and I could be wrong!

But Ron, don't forget the Japanese had an Emperor in that period. Could it be that they were importing right hand drive cars, which they then copied?

I think the answer probably lies in the very early "Motor Cars".  Some of them had a "tiller type" steering mech. which caused the manufacturers to put the "steering stick and drivers seat in the center of the car.
How this translated to right and left hand drives, I don't know.  As most "roads" in that early era were single lane and made for wagons and buggys, that might have had an influence.
