Abraham showed that he was ready to kill his old son. It was a way of saying thank you  for things which was given to him by god.  However as you known, God showed his mercy and send a male sheep to Abraham for killing it instead of his son. Many Muslim will do it same thing

but this year festival won't be in weekend so in Turkey we have 4,5 holiday (0,5 is festival eve)  We can say that Turkey will be shut down as America. All people in big cities are going to hometowns. Even I will go tonight

Happy Holidays   Big smile

Are you Greek or Turkish? Your username sounds Greek to me. Just curious. No offense intended

Sounds much like our thanksgiving, here in the US.  Everyone is off for 4 days, and your "hometown" is the preferred dest.  for Thanksgiving Dinner.

Ollios, are there traditional foods cooked for the holiday?  We have the Turkey and cranberry sauce, candied sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie.  [down south it's sweet potatoe pie].

Anyway, have a good holiday.Smile

I see. Yes a lot of Turks are partially Greek and European. Turkey is a melting pot of ethnicities and cultures.

This is the second holiday in Islam; one is after the Ramadan 3 days, the other one is this. This is also important because millions Muslim visit Mecca during this holiday and after this visit, they become pilgrim

In food case, it is not hard to guess. We have all sheep so it is not a vegan festival but there is one food, which is as important as turkey in thanksgiving, is "Kavurma"  (korma) which is specially eaten in breakfast, not dinner.

Kormakormaaqormakhormakurma, or azid is a dish originating in South Asia or Central Asia[1] which can be made with yogurt, cream, nut and seed pastes orcoconut milk. It is a type of curry.
The word "korma" is derived from Urdu ḳormā or ḳormah, meaning "braise",[2] derived in turn from Turkish kavurma literally meaning "cooked meat",[3] Korma (قورمه or azid in Persian)[4] has its roots in the Mughlai cuisine[1] of modern-day India and Pakistan. It is a characteristic Indian dish which can be traced back to the 16th century and to the Mughal incursions into present-day Northern India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Classically, a korma is defined as a dish where meat or vegetables are braised with water, stock, and yogurt or creamy azid. The technique covers many different styles of korma.

The flavour of a korma is based on a mixture of spices, including ground coriander and cumin, combined with yogurt kept below curdling temperature and incorporated slowly and carefully with the meat juices. Traditionally, this would have been carried out in a pot set over a very low fire, with charcoal on the lid to provide all-round heat. A korma can be mildly spiced or fiery and may use lambchickenbeef or game; some kormas combine meat and vegetables such as spinach and turnip. The term Shahi (English: Royal), used for some kormas indicates its status as a prestige dish, rather than an everyday meal, and its association with the court.

This is a food for a huge region, but we do with our way. It can be change even different side of Turkey. We use just lamb or beef not chichken and we just add cumin and thymus. We don't add yogurt or curry

My paternal grandma is also made another traditional food which needs more effort. It is Tripe Soup. It is made from animals stomach and eaten with vinegar-garlic sauce.
