Generally speaking the Indian Subcontinent is on the Indian Plate, which collided into the Eurasian Plate. It by definition, the Indian Subcontinent, a peninsula, bordered on three sides by water. Just because an area can be landlocked within such a region, doesn't preclude it from being a part of that peninsula.

Terms like, tundra, peninsula are indeed restricted to geography and not geology. Also I'd remind you of the fact that Sri Lanka and the Maldives are not peninsulas, but islands, yet very much parts of the sub continent.

The whole collision of plates is a theory. We can discuss theories elsewhere just as what we have discussed can be moved to another post. We can also discuss weather North Africa and Cyprus can be included in the Middle East. But what's accepted is Iran, Babylon etc. all fit in the Middle East.

I'm pretty sure, PakistanShield, that the definition I gave, as a peninsula precludes islands, something only you had added for whatever reason lost to me at present. As for theories about plate tectonics go, the colliding of plates is generally accepted I believe, although any half decent map of the region will make a pretty straight forward case of that region being one mass.

OK, I believe that it is about time a rudimentary poll should go ahead regarding the terms "Near East", "Middle East" or any other alternative, so unless admin wishes for this thread to continue I close this thread.
What a handsome figure of a dragon. No wonder I fall madly in love with the Alani Dragon now, the avatar, it's a gorgeous dragon picture.
