It has been argued that Zarathushtra caused the Indo-Iranian split.  That would mean that the Zarathushtrian scriptures known as the Avesta is not necessarily more linguistically archaic, but more ancient historically than the Hindu Vedas.  If Zarathushtra wasn't the catalyst behind the Indo-Iranian split what was?

Yes, exactly.  Zarathushtra's monotheistic reformation caused a rift between his followers and the polytheistic pre-Vedic counterparts and therefore a divergance in language as well.

I should also add that if Zarathushtra's monotheistic reformation did indeed cause the Indo-Iranian split then this would place Zarathushtra before 2500-2000 BCE before the Indo-Iranian split.
