the 2 first thing come in my mind when i hear the dragon is 2 type . the dragon from china 2 the  dragons who sleep in front of princess's castle gates waiting to be killed by brave knights (possibly they didn't find better place for sleeping LOL)

ok enough joking how did we create it . the closest beast to dragons are dinosaurs but they are gone long time ago but we can see dranon's trace from east to west . how can nations talk about a beast which NEVER exist it would be ok if just we could see their trace among few nations we could say this is come from their Imagination but when i see them from china to england this make me wonder

any info about how and when the first dragon born ?

Turkish word for dragon is "ejderha" which came from Fars (ajdahāk/ajdahābut in old Turkic word "evren" is used for it. In modern Turkish, it means cosmos/universe

so maybe it is an unborned creature in some cultures. It can be the universe.

Etymology time....

dragon (n.) Look up dragon at Dictionary.com
early 13c., from Old French dragon, from Latin draconem (nominative draco) "huge serpent, dragon," from Greek drakon (genitive drakontos) "serpent, giant seafish," apparently from drak-, strong aorist stem of derkesthai "to see clearly," from PIE *derk- "to see." Perhaps the literal sense is "the one with the (deadly) glance."

The young are dragonets (14c.). Obsolete drake "dragon" is an older borrowing of the same word. Used in the Bible to translate Hebrew tannin "a great sea-monster," and tan, a desert mammal now believed to be the jackal.

αἰὲν ἀριστεύειν
Een aristevin
“Ever to Excel“
From Homer's Iliad (8th century BC).
Motto of the University of St Andrews (founded 1410), the Edinburgh Academy (founded 1824) and others.

Always enjoy a bit of etymology, TITAN, but I can't help wonder what the term for dragon was a number of thousand years ago in the Chinese neolithic, sometime earlier than the origin of the word we use now.
What a handsome figure of a dragon. No wonder I fall madly in love with the Alani Dragon now, the avatar, it's a gorgeous dragon picture.

Several years ago an archeaologist started going through all of the dig site notes from many digs, over many years, in several countries.  What she found were refs to fossil bones being discovered on many sites.  As they didn't fit the era they were excavating, they were noted, then set aside.  In Greece particularly, she found that many villages had these large fossils in prominent places.  Evidence showed they believed these bones to be those of the ancient greek heroes.

Just about every culture has stories surrounding fossils. I can see dragons coming from finding a T Rex skull, with teeth intact.

From what I understand dinosaur fossils were prized exhibits in Greek temples, they were used to attract customers.

Yomud, your asking questions that have been asked for centuries.Wink  There are no clear and easy answers.  Fossils of dinos exist globally, some of them were large flying animals.  Nearly every ancient culture had tales of Dragons, including Native Americans.

First of all, modern dragon image in West, not base on ancient Greeks. I don't thing they can fly(or wings) and can fire. Ancient people in west don't believe dragons(like in modern type). They believe gigantic snakes and these snakes are ancester of dragon culture

Hittite

Nord

Greek

Hydra
This is what we thing. It just need wings to be a real modern dragon
this is from one of the my best game Big smile
these are how ancient Greeks saw Hydra

even it doesn't have legs

Dragons were just serpents in Greek myths, also in similar close cultures

What if dragons were real; a fantastic documantry. Scientist found a real dragon skeleton(fiction) and try to understand why they could fly or fire in scientific methods. I have loved it when I watched it

go youtube and watch

There is another theory - it is generally accepted by most scholars and researchers that every myth and legend began with a real event of some sort, "a grain of truth". Therefore, it is postulated that once there were creatures who appeared to "dragons".

That having been said, where did the myths and legends of flying horses, mermaids, sea monsters, Cyclops, werewolves, vampires, wizards, sorcerers, necromancers, the pantheon of gods and goddesses and all of the other "mythical" creatures throughout history come from?  Where did the Egyptians get their concepts of the man-beast gods they worshipped?  Where did the Feathered Serpent god of Meso-America come from?  And where did all of the legends of blond, blue-eyed tall man-gods-from-the-sky come from all over the world?

I have no pat answers for any of the above.  I can however, tell you what I know from my research and my own observations.  I have been collecting fossils in my region for about the last 5 years as an essential phase of understanding the Paleo and Archaic peoples who inhabited this region. [Central New Jersey]

First, you must realize that 90% of the fossils found worldwide, are marine fossils.  The town I live in is situated on the Rancocas Creek, at the convergence of Mill Creek.  Marine fossils of every type imaginable can be found here.

The early peoples valued the fossils.  They were very aware that these "stone animals" had once lived.  There were certain animal fossils, mainly cephalopods, that had a spiritual meaning or value.

Considering that marine fossils are found the world over, I can imagine that the early inhabitants also found them and had there own ideas about them.

Remember, there have been 5 major extinction events, and a handful of smaller ones.  The Permian extinction wiped out 95 % of all life in the oceans.  About 75 million years later, the Ordovician Extinction took out 85-90% of marine life.
