The port cities were hit the hardest due to the trickle of international trade in the shadow of a fallen market. Over 2 million jobs evaporated almost overnight. During this period you actually had a lot of people leaving the city for rural places to do more service-oriented work. If you were really smart though, you went to Washington DC, the only city that actually flourished at the time due to the expansion of government.
