The most famous US-Canadian conflict was the War of 1812: the Americans invaded Canada but were defeated, their navy sunk and their capital burned. However, this was not the first time the two countries fought: during the American revolution the US tried to force Canadian loyalists to join their uprising. The Canadians refused and kicked them out
Probably why we ain't been back since. Tho tis true hypothetical operation plans for war versus Canada, Mexico and Britain, to name but a few, have also seen the light of day long after that 12 action. War Plan Red was such.
More on that and the rationales can be had by examining the 'color coded series' of US plan during the early-mid 20th ce.
Just read some books and got a couple of articles on the subject and can not see how the War of 1812 can not be seen as anything other than a defeat for the USA.
Thousands of Canadians fought in the Union Army during the Civil War; yet at the beginning of the Civil War some military men stationed in British Canada (famously Garnet Wolseley) were eagerly expecting war with America.

Actually it's the other way around. The British military were the only sane people in the whole affair.
It started with a US invasion lead by some general nutjob and Picket of civil war fame. The British governor of Canada then ordered the army and navy to attacked them. The British commander instead ignored this order and decided to seek diplomatic advice from London. News reached Washington of what was going, they couldn't believe the US general was so stupid sent him into exile in the west and made peace with a delegation from London.
The British commander averted a war by disobeying the governer's orders.
Stupidity got us into this mess, why can't it get us out?
The Brits were expecting conflict in the 1860s, but they weren't eager for war with America. This was the time of the Fenian Raids by Irish-American Civil War veterans

Without a doubt, the War of 1812 was a defeat. The Americans failed to achieve any of their aims: the British still held Canada and only stopped conscripting sailors because the war with Boney was over
