Hi Guys

I am doing some research on historic Empires for a presentation. Through my online research I stumbled upon this site which clearly has a wealth of very useful information. However for the part of the presentation I am looking at I am trying to determine why Empires are created.

Firstly I know such a question begs a long complex answer, however the challenge here is to simply provide a few sentances on what you think the key reason(s) are for the creation of Empires.

My background is business not history and my current view is that Empires are of course created for a number of reasons but primarily to centralise control, wealth and resources, similarly to how Multinational companies benefit from having a global production and customer base.

I am sure there are a number of reasons such as spreading religion, etc, however I am interested in what you consider to be the central reason(s) of the creation of significant empires throughout history.

Thanks for your help guys, I am looking forward to some interesting responses.

Then you have answered the question. In part.
The formation of empires was and not only that.. but it was also because a significant sized element of people/s, often times from separate bases or components. Ntl, became capable of sharing or at least tolerating diverse ethnic, national, cultural, economic and religious identifications as a larger group then clan and family social heirarchy would have allowed.
And equally import through expansion and technology, to include military campaigning and conquest, they acquired the resources and manpower to either defend them and or continue to develop them.
Normally I charge for this stuff....after all, I remain a good capitalist.
But your a newbie. So Merry Christmas.
And as you remain a confessed learner of history...begin here.

Imperialism is largely motivated by greed: a powerful nation finds itself short of resources and deems it more convenient to take them from its weaker neighbors

Apt but ntl less beware the confuison of that versus the definition attributed to colonialism. As they are not necessarily synomous.

And then also remember that the defintion of both and in particular imperialism; have always been in conflict. And certainly from a contextual era perspective.

Those of Lewis Samuel Feuer (whom interestingly enough had two variants) are not in total agreement with those of others to include: Edward Said, Walter Rodney or Robert Young..to name but three of the more exemplar scholars in the field of examnation.

Short answer: Because they can! Star
Long answer: It's called "evolution of the state": Caves > villages > city states > empires...
