In the US North Africans are considered whites. This makes discussion with Americans difficult, as one has to argue against what the state has decided. In the US its the Supreme Court, which decides a persons race. When I traveled in North Africa I did not find the people as a whole white. Nor did they look white on my tv when all these recent Arab revolts were going on.
I believe that whiteness is a state of mind, and that there are no human races. Do the North Africans in the US really consider themselves whites? I have found that whites define themselves as white against Blacks and blackness. To be white is to be superior over Blacks and others. Then with all the stringent, state imposed racial classification, we find people discussing human behaviour in term of race. Like a person does not vote because of his personal ideas, beliefs and convictions (strong belief), but because of his race.
