I often read that ordinary soldiers and even officers are restricted from wearing sidearms. Only military police and certain officers are allowed to bear sidearms or issued sidearms.

Is there any reason for this?

Officers doesn't engage directly on battle.
The mexican officers uses a Glock 19 and a MP5A3.

Privates, Corporals and Sargents are not alowed to use sidearms or submachine weapons, but the regular G3.

Problem with sidearms (pistols) is short range (25m) and limited

effectiveness compared to long arms.  Require long time training and

practice to become proficent.  Also problems with accidents and "friendly

fire" incidents between soldiers.  Normally are only issued to special units

or to soldiers who need a defensive weapon (medics, MP, pilots, tank

crewman) and whose duties prevent them from using rifles or other

long arms (SMG).
