Waited ages for this to be put up on youtube. The classic BBC 4 part history of the Mongols from donkeys years ago. Unlike most revisionist documentaries this doesn't heroise the Mongols but shows them for the butchers they were.

Stupidity got us into this mess, why can't it get us out?

This mini-series is what got me interested in steppe history when I first saw it back in the 90's.

I concur that they were brutal and merciless in the main. Anybody who cant realize that needs only to refer to the contextual contemporary sources. And attempt to avoid the nationalistic frenzy which is usually associated with revisionism centuries later. Otoh.... They were also adept and damn near brilliant in their innovative use of military tactics...as mounted light infantry.

The only thing that separates "barbarians" from "civilized nations" is that the civilized nations have writers, poets and historians to make their own brutality sound romantic.
