During WWII, 60,000 British, Australian and other Commonwealth Prisoners of War were used as slave labor, building the railway linking Bangkok and Rangoon. Conditions were terrible, with over 18000 deaths from starvation, disease, and deliberate abuse and murder by the brutal Japanese guards

Australian POW Herbert Edwards was crucified by the Japs for stealing cattle to feed his starving comrades. He only survived because the other prisoners smuggled food to him

Hiroshi Abe supervised construction of the railway and was sentenced to death after the war. However, the sentence was commuted to 15 years imprisonment that ended with his release in 1957

In the words of this survivor, the death railway was "hell on earth." Had it not been for the atom bomb, he would have died by firing squad like countless other British officers

One of the heros of the Burma Death Railway was local Thai mayor Boonpong Sirivejapandh. He risked his life smuggling food, clothing and medicine to the half-starved prisoners

There are many stories of acts of sadistic cruelty committed by the Japs. Once, a guard accused a group of prisoners of stealing and selling a shovel to buy food. He threatened to shoot everyone unless the thief confessed. One prisoner stepped forward and was murdered. When the shovels were counted again, it was discovered none were missing and the dead man was innocent

In March 1943 4 men tried to escape from the infamous Burma railway . They were Irishmen Fusilier Timothy Kenneally of Bishopstown, Private Patrick Fitzgerald of Kilmeadon, Sergeant Joseph Kelly, a Liverpool native and Englishman Edward Reay. After two weeks they were captured by Thai police and handed over to the Japanese and returned to their original camp, They endured several days of beatings and torture until eventually they were crucified and eventually shot.

The Japs introduced crucifixion in the 1500s as a way of humiliating converts to Christianity. Kevin, can you name and shame these Thai collaborators and Japanese executioners so we can add them to the "Monsters in Uniform" thread?

The Japs inflicted mental in addition to physical torture on the prisoners. Andy Coogan buried his own friends then was forced to dig another grave for himself. This continued for weeks
