THIS DAY IN HISTORY
*THE ENFUMMADS OF THE DAHRA
*THE 18th of JUNE 1845
*PLACE: Between Chlef & Ain Defla (Algeria).
The gloomy and beyond belief massacre and imagination of innocent Algerian civilians ( Elderly people, young and children) which took place in an area called Ouled Riyah presently situated between the two Algerian districts of Chlef & Ain defla on the 18thof June 1845, was among the dark evil chapter of French colonization of Algeria.
The enfumads or (smoky cave) of the Dahra, where more than 1000 Martyrs of the tribe of Ouled Ryah perished in such unbelievable acts of barbarism committed by the French at that time, the event subject of our dairy where a whole tribe was victim of the barbarity of those officers who killed in cold blood.
It all started in June 1845 , where the then General Bugeaud led operations raids in the region of Chlef (Orleansville) at that time,to this end , Bugeaud ordered his men to spare no soul, and among these officers, Colonel Pelissier was to carry out the dirty mission , it was the Dahra (area between Chlef & Ain defla) as the French were on the conquest of this region, which was courageously protected by Emir Abdelkader. 4000 soldiers accompanied by his subordinate, Colonel Pelissier gave orders to destroy everything by saying: "The skins of one of our drums were more precious in my eyes as the skin of all these wretches," as reported by Raoul Busquet in The African Journal, number 51 in 1907.
The villagers had echo of this new way of enfumades or smoky cave in villages , however for fear of their tribe being wiped out, they went to the famous “ Ghar Frachih” in the heights of Dahra , but to their great dam , these people were not informed of orders from the ugly creature of Bugeaud who ordered his soldiers that if "the inhabitants took refuge inside a cave, imitate Cavaignac and smoke them like foxes."
Fearing for their lives, the innocent villagers about a thousand women, children, and elderly men left their homes and belongings to seek refuge in this cave so as to escape their tormentors, they took the bare minimum: a few animals, clothes and some food. These caves situated in the Dahra Mountains had served as a refuge for centuries, once there, the Ouled Ryah had entered the lion's mouth, while women took care of their children, men kept silent in order not to alert the enemy. But to their unfortunate fate, the "Roumis" knew this shelter, the very fateful moment had arrived….
Colonel Pelissier and his army had surrounded the only way out of the cave, and ordered to shoot anyone trying to escape. Other groups had barricaded the entrance with dead wood, twigs and straw bales. The encampment, the Colonel ordered the commencement of the “enfumade”, Mass murder took place there, thousands of people died asphyxiated after 24 hours of agony ,on this odious assassination considered legitimate for the French settlers, a whole tribe was "sprayed and wiped off the map".
The dark chapter of this event within the history of Algeria, demonstrates the savagery and notorious brutality of the French soldiers who plied their trade as "killing machines". Another truth is reported by the Earl of Hedgehog: "Our soldiers crept slowly on the gentle slope back so fast that the civilized man to a barbarous state. They killed without mercy, they hit unnecessarily, they mutilated to punish. "
