Black Africans did indeed found great civilisations, most notably Ancient Egypt. There was also the land of Punt or Sheba whose queen became an ally (and, according to some, wife) of Jewish King Solomon

Not a lot is known, that does not mean they did not exist.  The Nok culture certainly had some impressive art, and the Garamantians certainly were skilled engineers.  "come to prominence" is a matter of debate - they did not come to prominence in western culture, but the Kingdom of Kush was certainly a local power, the same way that most European powers were throughout their entire history.
