Until seeing this, I was unaware at how early Nubian mercenaries had made there way to the Greek Mediterranean. The "Captain of the Blacks" fresco from Knossos, Crete, circa 1450-1400 bce, show a Minoan javelinman leading two Nubian mercenary javelinmen behind him. The two potrusions at his head are identified as feathers, which would normally be worn by the Nubians, and used to identify the Minoan as a part of their unit, and supposedly, their captain.
How exactly did they make there way there?
Soldier exchange with Egypt?
Slaves sold or traded with the Minoans?
Just some adventurers who left Egyptian service and found there way north?
