A delightful story about gauger's and whiskey making in the days when the penalties were merciless and swift and yet in many cases, on both sides, exemplifies with the sometimes insufferable charm of the perpetrators.

It is  a story with many facets, moralities, curiousities and charm. And in my ongoing research of similarities in the Irish and their forebearers and later friends and relatives who migrated to other shores; one can always see the lnk of the culture. This story could be identifiable within the Appalachia of eastern American or the high brooding, desert plains and canyons of my Llano. And in the minds eye, it's not difficult then to see the association with the crashing of waves along the granite walls of western Ireland.

They called it Poteen there and then and it's had many names since.....LOL

But one thing is as sure as the heat of the Jornada del Muerto in mid August...if you could drink it and live to see the sun the next day.....like the great Cúchulainn... you were a mighy man indeed.

LOL

A Fan, CV? It's exact strength varies, being entirely unregulated but never less than 95% alcohol LOL. My Father tells me a sup was put in front of him one time, and he was told to drink up. Not to lose face he downed it - fell off his chair and vomited everywhere LOL Of course, for the stronger men, a little might provide a night's entertainment but a horrible morning after!

My saintly white haired great grandmother called it Potcheen.  She lived until 99, and gave credit to "God and Potcheen".Big smile

Poteen/Potcheen can have some amazing effects.  I consider myself fortunate to have been able to witness one of the greatest live performances of Hamlet of all time, Poteen fueled.Star  And I mean Fueled!
I was at the McCarter theater in Princeton when Richard Harris and Richard Burton, unannounced [and uninvited] and totally toasted, crashed the backstage and took over the performance.  During which they opened and finished an entire bottle of.......Poteen.  It was one of those "one time only ever" events.

Being a former Ford Motor Company assembly line worker, I knew that a number of our brother line workers were from the south and some of them were quite familiar with the making of "moonshine" or "white Lightening." The only time I tried some was after it had been diluted by a cup of pepsi cola from a soda machine and the stuff still ate a hole in the bottom of the cup.  Strangely enough, the best home made whiskey that I tried came from a Yugoslavian immigrant who was a good friend of mine.  His elixer was made from left over grape skins and the waste left over from wine making.  It actually smelled faintly of grapes , but  kicked like a Missouri jackass.  Good stuff!
