Topic: Space Colonization Posted: 15-Apr-2011 at 18:23 |
So the year is 2500 A.D. Humans have finally developed an engine to take us to the farthest reaches of the galaxy. So we do what any normal human as been show to do. COLONIES!!!! How do we go about this?

Given the proclivity of humanities history...they probably lead with colonialist-explorers that combine a military expedition with science.. hoping for the best... prepared as they might be for the worst. With the assistence of what ever tech has been developed over the preceding 400 years.
Thanks

Hopefully space colonisation would be an international effort with colonists from Europe, India, Russia, China and America working together to create new societies. They would need to change the atmosphere of the planet (possibly by building lots of smelters and factories to create sufficient CFCs) and introduce plants to produce oxygen. Alternatively the scientists could create special genetically-modified humans capable of surviving in such conditions

They wouldn't genetically alter you. That would mean that 1) You can't live elsewhere. 2) you can't be stopped from rebelling because soldiers can't attack. 3) Human offbranch leads to ever more ethnic groups.

Why not? Scientists could easily modify human fetuses both physically and mentally. In addition to being able to survive these conditions these altered humans would be submissive (preventing rebellion) and sterile. They could be supervised and given tasks by normal team leaders in space suits. Once they have served their purpose of re-building the planet for our benefit they would age, die out and be replaced with a second wave of unaltered human colonists

What about empires in space? They would be difficult to maintain since light speed would place a limit on the speed of communications and travel. This brings us to the main problem of human colonization of space: Light Speed. Nothing can theoretically travel faster than light. This is not some shortcoming of present technology but a limit built into the universe, at least according to our current understanding of it, which nonetheless is all we have to work with.

A former member here once wrote in a reply to one of my posts, "Clay, you are a very scary person". I'm going to alter it some, Nick, your a very scary person. Man, along side some of your stuff, Brave New World looks like a kids comic book.
I believe there is already an organization, put in place by the intelligent Bush, "HW". By the time the technology is ready for space exploration, most of the work needed to put together colonists will have been done.
However, there is just enough of the conspiracy nut in me to wonder. After 40 years, why now? It may have slipped by a lot of folks, but as one of his last acts as Prez. "Dubya", did a JFK on putting humans on Mars. Why now? We know the motivations behind the Moon Race, what's going on here?

Our understanding of the Universe is changing almost daily. I personally believe the answer lies in the Quantum world. Unfortunately our understanding of Quantum Physics isn't changing as fast. A relatively recent discovery indicates that the Laws of Physics as we know them don't always apply in the Quantum World. Information being gleaned from projects like the Hadron Collider is starting to give us insights we hadn't before.
An example would be the work being done with Quarks. In the process of trying to understand them they discovered that, in the quantum world, tesaraks [spelling?] do indeed exist. Quick explanation- An object having larger interior dimensions than it's exterior. Example- Dr. Who's spaceship, the Tardis.
If anyone here has read "Dune", where science is heading is more toward the Idea of "Folding Space". Only without "spice".

Ιn a meta-scientific way I agree that the Light Speed limit may one day be disproven. Until such time however space colonization on any significant scale or at least of the sort popularized by sci-fi will continue to look impossible. More realistically man may still colonise space even within the strictures of the the Limit via building huge multigenerational arks and just taking many millenia to colonize surrounding space. Which brings us to the next issue: when does man stop being man. We are not Australopithecae and assuming evolution is speeded as per Nick or even if it just takes its normal course but it just takes a hell of a long time for man to colonize things than the people who will end up colonizing the universe will not, in any reasonable sense, be humans. They will be a different species descended from us. Post-humans if you will.

Before we hear"Welcome aboard" in future space ship,we have to solve: 1.artificial gravitation 2.artificial magnetic field 3.medical drugs that we can use in microgravity. 4.source of energy(until now is known as, nuclear power combined with ion engines) 5.Good Will of earth's nations and their contribution in convertible $! P.S. Have forgotten that our human genome would been suffered modification also, before the flight. !

This is why I believe we will colonize other systems with nanotech, self generating probes like the Van Neumann probe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-replicating_spacecraftNaonotech probes with AI. Tilper wrote that with a 100 gram payload an interstellar probe using laser enforced sail technology could reach 90% of lightspeed and reach Alpa Centauri in 5 years time. A 100 gram payload could be coded with enough bits to construct a simulation of a city of 10,000 inhabitatnts.

Unclefred! An amazing post! Thanks for it!
Regards,
Perhaps the "nano" mode is in our best interest?
Also, I might mention that I have been out of the Sci-fi reading mode for a few decades. But it seems I have missed a few good books?

Last price, could be placed 1kg in low earths orbit(350-450 km around the earth),was 10000$ without costs for "return me home".Bone voyage in space, hope got enough for tickets!Where do they sell tickets?!?
