See? The Ottoman light infantry also carried axes instead of swords. The Swiss had the mordaxt. The Indians and Southeast Asians had a great variety of axes, and the msot popular swordlike weapon in the area was the parang (machete), which was used in the manner of a light axe. As a personal hand-to-hand weapon it had a higher overall popularity than the sword, in the same way that the spear was the universal weapon for formation fighting.
